Finally got around to this MOD.
Had only a gas strut with 150nm of gas.
Was way to quick. Took it to a place in WA. They add half oil and just a tad more gas. Slows down much better. Still has a small amount of bounce at the end but not as bad. Sure it was worse with out the MOD. So all in all am happy will still maybe hold the door at the end though.

I would also recommend as stated before a 3mm plate is highly recommended.

I followed the instructions given in post #30 to replace my strut with a gas strut. Works great, thank Shirl & Co for this thread! Struts R US supplied the strut delivered in Victoria for $62.70. I used short shank balls straight into the existing holes. Here is a you tube video of the end result: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U9knD3-MZ4M
      Size: 585mm D120mm 46/8/300N

        Nice one, jbodey!

Are you struggling to close it or is that just closing it slowly for the purpose of the video?

Not a stuggle, it does take effort to close the door, it closes slowly - must be the same gas going past the valve on closing that lets the door open slowly.
My good wife approves of the mods if that is any help!

Update on the rear door gas strut:
We have travelled to the G2G;some 20,000 kms with the modified rear door, including Gibb River Road, Oodnadatta track, Namatjira Drive & the Central Arnhem Land Road.
It still works as good as new now, though at one stage the strut was, well how do I describe it....stuttering... when nearly closed. This happened after a very dusty section of road.
It came good without any intervention from me.
Sometimes on a slope the door requires a little help to open.
Whenever we park we are always mindful of needing room to open the door fully.
If I did it again I would not change anything.

                John,
                What is the D120mm measurement?
Also what is the 46 in the 46/8/300N figures. The 8/300N would be 8mm shaft, 300N of force.
I live in Nerang so will go see the guys over at Struts r us.
2007 GXL V6 - ARB Bullbar with LED lights, snorkel, extractors, 2 1/4" dual exhaust, K&N filter, dimpled/slotted rotors, headrest dvd players, Ebay Satnav/reverse camera, GME 3100TX, Tigerz11 Side awning on custom brackets with Maxtrax mounts, 300W Invertor, ARB Underbody protection, Lightbar and STZ 265/70 tyres.
Wish list in order I'll get them: Sliders, 2" lift, E-locker, Winch bar with winch.

Well I got time to install this today. What a ripper mod.
Strut specs are 585mm open length, 8mm shaft, 300N, 60% oil, 8mm ball thread.
I got the strut from Struts R Us in Nerang which is where I live so that was handy. They also do internet orders.
                      Install was as follows:
                      * Use a flat blade screwdriver to pop the cap off the bolt at the boot base of the existing bracket.
                      * Use a 12mm socket to remove the 3 bolts holding the bracket on.
                      * Grab a grinder/Dremel (I used a Dremel) and cut the top ring off the hole on the car side (NOT the door). Without doing this the ball for the strut sits too high and fowls the door. This is the small part once it was removed.
                      https://www.dropbox.com/s/danreairfx...10830.jpg?dl=0
                      * Grind the hole flat so the top is smooth. I then painted it with some black paint to protect it from rust.
                      * Screw in the strut balls. 1 on the car where you just grinded and 1 in the farthest hole along the bottom of the door.
                      * Push your strut on and bobs ya uncle.

Make sure you install a strengthening plate.

I might make 1 up eventually. We don't use the back door that often tbh.

You only have to use it once when someone lets go of it.

That's the purpose of the strut though. You let go and it slowly opens. Not like the old bracket where it just flies open.
