A ground independent antenna is electrically superior - where you mount it is still important though as shielding from the vehicle will affect performance. If you mount it half way up the back door, the antenna performance will be pretty good in the arc behind the vehicle and somewhat less in the forward arc.

I don't disagree but it is more dependant on antenna height than finding a big metal ground plane.

hey amts do you intend on leaving the antenna fitted full time looking at your vid showing the shelf you should have plenty of room to keep the base on without the antenna fitted I have a Gme with spring base and the base is 100mm high.
the cables are hard wired to the base its easy to figure out install, once you get it you'll see.
If you are able to feed some spare cable into the spring to allow for flex.

if you like the idea of the knockdowns have a look at theuteshed.com.au for another alternative

I checked the height I have above the antenna tab on the bullbar to the shelf and it is about 250mm. So now it's just waiting until the antenna arrives in the mail. Should be plenty of room for the antenna base from the info above. Thanks again all.

I've heard they're poorly designed by some BAE bloke... That's a bachelor of arts and equine studies for all of you playing at home.

That should read "I've heard they're designed by some poorly paid BAE bloke who needs to feed 4 kids and now 2 guinea pigs ..."

I didn't know you liked pets, Andrew!? Now I know what to buy your kids for their birthdays: rabbits, guinea pigs, puppes, etc.

I don't. The missus bought it. I suppose they're cheaper than having more kids.

On more exciting news, the antenna(s) have arrived. Unfortunately, the base is nearly 310mm long. I now have 3 options:
                            1) swap parking positions in the garage with the missus' car
                            2) fit antenna at the spare tyre
                            3) fit to roof rack and fabricate a knockdown bracket

Could always make a little cut out in the shelf... Would be like docking at the international space station... Could be fun.

Yep, that will be option no. 4. Then just keep a spanner handy to get the antenna on and off.
