  • Does Timing Belt need to come off to replace Water Pump? - 1kzte

    Gday all,
Yep the title says it all...
I have done numerous searches but havent found the direct answer.
Im putting a new radiator in, and am considering replacing the water pump (amongst other things) whilst I am there.
We have some big trips planned in the next few years and I guess i am just being cautious by wanting to replace it.
The pump is not leaking and has no play in the bearings - the car has done 230kms and I assume the pump is original.
So - should I replace the pump?
If so - Does the timing belt need to come off to access it?
If the timing belt does need to come off, is there specialist tooling required to complete the task?

I am a Fitter & Turner by trade and have done a few timing belts before but not on my Prado.
For example, It would be handy to know how to stop the cam from rotating when undoing the top pulley and any other hints that may prevent me from taking my car to mechanics that i simply dont trust....

    Any advise would be appreciated.

    Cheers Drew.

Thanks Andrew, thats a good reference... Its the same theory for the 1kzte & the 1kd by the sounds of it.

Just need to confirm how to hold the cam whilst undoing bolt off the top pulley.

Im sure the timing belt backing plate needs to come off as well to gain acess to the water pump.

      Cheers mate.

Yes it needs to come off as it obscures two pump mounting bolts.
As does the mounting bracket for the alternator. The books don't tell you that one but two of the pump bolts flanges are shared and covered up with the alternator mounting bracket bolts.
You have to take the alternator our which means removing the battery first. There's a long bolt at the to hinge point and a smaller one at the bottom via the tensioner.
Remove the alternator and you'll find two more bolts at the rear of the mounting bracket holding it to the block. Remove those and you can take the mounting bracket off which allows the pump to removed.

A lot of pissing around for what should be a simple job...

Hey gday malcolm. thanks for the reply. ive actually just started the job this morning. It all seems fairly straight forward and i will be taking some pics to share here on PP for others who may be planning on doing the same job.... it seems like a wise move changing the pump out as the bearing has a fair bit of end float and is a bit squeaky as well when it spins... A big thanks to Roo for the 'heads up' on a few things... Updates are coming on the progress... cheers.

Ha! doing mine as we speak. Thats how I discovered the bloody alternator bracket.
Roo is very knowledgable and a big help..
Did ne advise you to change the cam seal whilst you have the cover plate off?
Also you need some sealant to stick the timing cover back plate to the block. There's no real gasket but needs sealant. Off to SuperCrap to get some now.

Ok all, its been established that to change the water pump out on a 1KZTE the timing belt and the cam seal retaining plate must be removed to access the water pump...

I have just finshed the job and the following is a brief outline of whats involved along with a few photos of the process for those who may need a bit a reference.

A big shout out to '##########' for his advise and patience along the way - cheers John.

                  Righty O then.

Let you engine cool down and remove any underbody plates.
Disconnect the battery. (i did leave the battery connected to run my light via the accesories system)
Place a bucket under the radiator 'tap' and drain coolant from the radiator. Drain any excess coolant from the engine block by undoing the 10mm drain plug. This plug is on the Passenger side of block under the inlet manifold.
Remove top & bottom radiator hoses & coolant fill tank.
Undo bolts for radiator shroud and tie it off to the engine leaving room to extract the radiator.
If you have a winch cradle you will have to remove the two top cross braces to remove the bottom radiator bolts.
                  Remove radiator
Remove intercooler to acess rocker cover, whilst I was there I also renewed the injectors and glow plugs.

Next part is getting to access the water pump.

Remove the radiator shroud, belts, viscous fan, altinator and timing belt cover.
With the glow plugs removed and handbrake applied, select Neutral in both the trans and the transfer case.
With a 22mm spanner, rotate the crank clockwise to align the TDC mark on the crank with the timing mark on the top cam pulley and the bottom belt drive pulley.
Remove the Timing belt idler pulley and the Timing belt. If reusing the timing belt, mark with a paint pen the direction of rotation so you can install it back the same way.

Next, remove the Rocker cover to access the 'Hex' on the Cam shaft. This is where you put a large shifter to stop the cam from turning whilst undoing the bolt for the top cam pulley.

After cracking the bolt on the top cam pulley, the job of removing the pulley has arrived.

The official way of removing the pulley is by using a gear puller - which I didnt have.
After consulting my mate Chris who is a heavy diesel fitter, we agreed that seeings how the gear was located on a 'Taper' we could remove it by tapping the pulley either side of the key.
2 sharp but soft hits popped the pulley off.

Next undo the bolts that retain the cam seal retainer and remove. The cam seal retainer plate has some sealant behind it, so a little leverage is required to remove it.

At that point I only had a little time remaining before work so I replaced the thermostat.

Remove the Thermostat housing and thermostat, taking note the small valve on the thermostat must be re-installed in the 12 oclock position. Torque your thermostat housing bolts up to 13 Nm.

Finally the water pump is exposed!

Remove the altinator bracket and remove the water pump

Take a few minutes to compare the 2 waterpumps to ensure Toyota havent given you the wrong part. What I did find was my old water pump had exessive end play in the bearing and was quite noisy and ruff to spin... 240,000 kms if definatley the latest you should change our your water pump... if you want reliablity that is!
