  • EGR blanking plate to block off or restrict?

Just chatting with a friend who bought a chip it module and all accessories and noticed that the egr blanking plate has a hole in it .He was saying that if it is plugged completely it will bring up codes.
I have done this job to dozens of D40's and Pathfinder's with no faults but not 150 prado's yet.

Has anyone plugged it completely? what issues did you come across?

    Hi sbclover,

I didn't block mine off, I put a ball bearing in the tube to stop the EGR Valve working.

If it made a difference, it was only marginal.

The computer threw up an alarm, however I can't remember the code.

I did this a day or so before a service & my friendly Toyota People reset the alarm after I removed the ball bearing.

    Tar Trek.

Hey Sbclover, some cars will throw engine lights some cars won't. Usually we would block them off completely then if they throw a code drill a small hole and keep on doing it until it won't throw a code. We haven't blocked a 150 Prado EGR at head office yet so I can't 100% confirm or deny if it's necessary to have the hole in it.

Just wondering if anyone has any further experience on blocking the egr on a 150 yet?? Do we have to leave a hole drilled in the blockoff plate & if so what diameter hole??

        Cheers
        James

why do we fit a blanking plate? to stop EGR soot mixing with PCV oil mist and covering the inside of our intake manifolds with crud. So fitting a blanking plate with a hole kind of defeats the purpose doesn't it?

                    Yep, disregard my last post.
Have given it considerable thought and decided to go with a pro vent catch can as a more effective improvement. Thanks DJ

So considering the general concensus on PP is that EGR is beneficial for the turbo to work properly, why do it? Between EGR and PCV...EGR is the lesser of the two evils, plus it keeps your car legal.

The plate with a 7mm hole should be beneficial where the EGR Cooler bolts to the head. Not a blank, a flow reduction modification!

To reduce valve wear, to reduce the egr & whole inlet system clogging up, to improve fuel economy/efficiency, to keep the engine oil cleaner, to save injector tips from getting caked & affecting spray patterns which could be a contributor to holes in pistons.

Save, injectors, oil changes, fuel, & maybe an engine.

A catch can will help with some of the mess only. Oil residue alone does not cause problems, every vehicle has that from blow by.

The evil part is the egr soot. Not the Pcv. The big issue is from where they come together.
A very bad design, causing a lot of problems.

Have fun whatever your choices may be.

YES! #######, I agree to all that. Can we bookmark that post? it's a good summary.
EGR and PCV are not welcome and removing both are what we aim for. I've had vehicles where both have been done and it brings joy to see a clean manifold and golden engine oil.
It's just that putting a blank which has a hole in it is a bit like installing a snorkel with extra holes drilled into the side to improve air intake?
What I meant by 'lesser of two evils' is that a catch can is an option which everyone can do and the vehicle will not suffer detrimental effects from it and saves the intercooler from becoming an oil collector, as well as removing the medium EGR soot requires to stick to surfaces.
Blanking EGR brings the most benefits, but also more varied results and will require an OBDII scanner to clear codes.

'Tis a can of worms and a headache. I'm all for blocking EGR, just got to do it right

                            just to add.

6mm hole in mine and no codes coming up.

They are many out there running around with no codes.
                              Each vehicle does vary.
Some have a full block, I don't recommend a full block off.
5mm works, for many, others choose 8 or 10mm.
The vehicle I'm monitoring has a 7mm hole & in thousands of Klm's has not thrown codes. I think 7 is a good balance.
