EGR blanking plate to block off or restrict?

After 108k I had approx 5mm build up of crap on my intake. The intake pipe is normally approx 60mm, I'll let you do the maths on the amount of restriction. Suffice to say after the clean and plate placement the improvement in performance is definitely noticeable.

I will attempt to have a look at what is involved in doing what you mentioned. More questions will follow.

So if the plate goes into a say 30% or less blockage is then worth doing it or by that stage a full clean is the way to go? Not sure if that question is set out correctly but I hope it is in the right direction! I just want to make sure that what I do is worth the effort otherwise a drive to Mel looks eminent!

Your half way there putting the plate in, may as well clean the valve & elbow.
IMO you should get a pLate in asap. Cumulative effect.

So just want to throw this out there to see if anyone has done it or attempted and if they have what were the results or if you have thought about it and turned away from doing it why and what could be the potential risks involved?

Has anyone thought about throwing in a blanking plate at the EGR outlet from the engine, complete with no hole. Then tapping into the outlet pipe for the intercooler and running a line into the EGR, somewhere pre valve/MAF sensor, so that it boosts up the now blanked off EGR system with clean, crisp DELICIOUS non exhaust carbonated air. Hopefully allowing the engine to breath a whole lot better. Which in turn should not throw a fault code and not require a hole in the blanking plate?

People have tried lots of plumbing ideas, often ending in p0400.

Just 7mm it works. Simple as.

####, my vehicle 3.0 is close to 50k km. Is it too late to use the plate or what is the way to go with that sort of mileage?

Well what I want to know is that if I should make time and effort to drive to Mel to find #### or at that low mileage of 50k I may get away without cleaning the whole EGR thing and just get the plate in place? How can this be determined? Can the level of soot be determined by any tests or Techstream?

If you can get the plate in yourself, you can clean it yourself, it's only 4 more 12mm bolts.
Putting a plate in without damaging cooler is quite a job, may as well do the clean.

I have had a restricting plate installed with the 7mm hole for about 15,000Klm, cleaned the EGR and elbow etc (2011 model), no codes, all good. I crawled under the car today to prep for a 90,000Klm service and I have noticed an oil stain with a drop of thick black oil hanging off the bottom of the turbo, it appears that it has just started dripping as there is nothing on the garage floor or to the rear of the turbo. I do not have a Catch Can as I believed the restricting plate would stop almost all of the fumes. There has been no difference to the running of the car, no codes or differences performance wise etc.

Has anybody with a restricting plate installed noticed any oil appearing on/under the turbo. Would a Catch Can stop this (fingers crossed), or is my turbo on the way out.

I am no expert but over the years on this forum I can't recall any mentions of oil on the turbo after fitting a plate. Some people like a catch can and others reckon the oil acts as a lubricant for the motor and is meant to be there. Again can't recall any mention of a catch can stopping oil on the turbo before or after fitting the catch can.

Not good news I know but I suppose you need to investigate the oil on the turbo further

I have done a bit of reading up on Turbo websites (Google search) and they all mention that if there is a problem/change with crankcase ventilation then this can cause the turbo to drip oil although there is nothing wrong with the turbo. I would think that fitting a EGR Restriction Plate could change the balance in the ventilation of the oil fumes, forcing more of the fumes out of the engine at the top rocker cover point. The hose from this top rocker cover outlet goes straight down to the turbo! This is where a catch can is fitted to intercept any oil fumes in this hose. So I will be also fitting a catch can tomorrow. Hopefully this will remedy the leak. What are peoples thoughts on this.

Taking the egr valve off, cleaning it and installing the plate, do you need any new gaskets/sealants at all?

i'm going to install 7mm plate on my 150 prado and clean as much as possible

Not sure of differences on 150 as regards R&I, but when we did my 2009 120 1KD, we removed the inlet manifold, you can then clean the valve ports, but do so carefully with a vacuum cleaner on hand.

Optional: I went further, had the head off & sent for full clean & valve re-seat. Engine internals were like new, so now my engine is nearly back to new condition. On ####'s advice for Qld temps I use Penrite HPR 15-50 & use LiquiMoly Diesel Inlet Cleaner every oil change (@ 7,500K intervals -or 5000K if long dist towing involved). Always check the oil strainer.
Yes 7mm EGR plate installed.
