And gxl_d4d, your engineer mate also had the luxury of designing for a situation where there was plenty of time to be able to fully charge batteries and battery banks.

The very flaw in the claims made by all these wonder device sellers is that they ALWAYS neglect to mention that, like your engineering mates situation, you need a lot more time to allow these wonder devices the time to actually get to a point where they can fully charge a battery.

gxl_d4d, get this correct, I have never stated that these wonder devices can not fully charge batteries, in the right situation, and contrary to what you may think of my posts, I also make the claim that an alternator can NOT fully charge your LOW batteries, for the very same reason DC/DC devices can’t.

The reality is that if you use a lot of power while camped, it is highly unlikely that you will drive long enough fully charge your batteries, no matter what system you use and the misleading advertising claims made by the sellers of these wonder devices is not helping people to get genuine info on how best to set up for their specific needs.

The one thing an alternator can do is replace the greatest amount of used battery capacity in the shortest time.

Again, there are far cheaper options that give far better results than these DC/DC devices do.

So your telling me that $1300 for a dual battery install is a bit expensive when i can just get a SBI12 for around $100 + the cost of a good battery, tray, fuses, cable, terminals e.t.c. Is it that easy or am i missing something?

It's that easy, too many people want to complicate what should be simple.

Looking at the year model of your car it could be that the alternator MAY not handle charging 2 batteries.
When I was working at a 4wd store recently we had a new Ford Ranger in with a dual battery setup and it would not charge the second battery due to the alternator turning off once the first battery is charged.
We had to fit a dc-dc charger set up to charge the other battery.
So it might be worth checking that out.

It cost me $90 for the redarc SBI12, $170 for the battery tray (you need a good solid one to reduce the chance of cracking in the guards) $100 for cable, heatshrink, lugs and zipties, $$$ for what ever battery you want. I got an Optima D27F for $350. So total install should not cost you more than $700.

Charging wise I now run D27F for both starting and Aux. I have a diode and I have no problems charging both batteries like most people on this forum.

Hi nudge and the Ford charging system is an orphan system with very few other vehicles having anything like it.

So it does not relate to how Toyotas work, and I emphasis that Toyotas do work at charging batteries, while the Ford system still has problems even after fitting DC/DC devices.

Ford has opted for the cheapest possible way to reduce their vehicle’s exhaust emissions and have given zero consideration for the end user, particularly in the case of the Ranger, which is marketed as a commercial vehicle.

I run an SBI12 with Yellowtop D34 (without diode), mainly power a Waeco 50l fridge and some fluro lights, aswell as compressor on occasion. Havn't had any issues with the system.

One advantage of the SBI12 is the override ability, to use the aux battery as starter.

Well... I went with the BCDC1220.. My reasoning being that I will be able to use it to charge not only an Aux battery but also the camper trailers batteries. It may have been more expensive and it may be overkill and whilst I accept every ones point regarding smart isolators, I guess in a 70K + vehicle i didnt really see saving $200.00 as a priorty. If it turns out that I made an error, I'll live with it but to me, the impression I got was that a regulated charge would be better for the life of the second battery as well as the abvitity to set different charging profiles depending on the type of battery.

because of how easy it is to wire in to the vehicle, nice and neat, just how I like it. Out of the older version which didn't have the solar regulator as the newer version has, I got 8 years out of a 105 amp All Rounder, and it was still going strong.
In the 150, I installed the 250 Dual and the voltage was always right up there. I install the battery box set up in the rear of the vehicles these days. Two reasons, portable battery situation for power to your fridge or whatever, and to keep the weight down on those guards there in the front. Whatever = You can torture someone you don't like out in the bush and have the power to drive all the tools of the trade. Like those little chisels that you can get for use on teeth.
Don't make comment on this as I will be over to your place to show my most present system that I have installed in my 95 series.
I want to take this opportunity to thank Jamie from JTS for making my portable torture lab possible and for giving me portable power. Great portable battery boxes, Jamie.
Now Andrew, don't make comment as I have your area on the radar.

Couldnt agree more. I have fitted heaps of Redarc SBI12's over the years to my own vehicles, my mates and a heap more to mining Toyota's/hire cars. KISS principle all the way.

A bit OT, but does the Prado require the LV version of the BCDC charger?

Does it offer any advantages, or is the standard item the optimal model for the Prado?

Bugger. Wish I'd seen this a few days ago before I ordered my BCDC1225 setup. Part of the explanation I got was that the charging profile of the DC charger compared to the alternator was better for preserving the battery than with just alternator charging. If it doubles the life of a $400 battery, it seemed worth it to me. He may have been full of it but too late now, it's on order so I guess I'll see how it goes.

Hi AJ, I've been deciding which way to go with my dual batt setup for awhile now. Been to arb & tjm and also a few private shops and pricing is wide are varied. My application is simple - no camper/caravan trailer, just an engel and some lights. Been almost talked into a $1600 dc charger system. Now I'm set on a SB isolator and will keep it simple. Thanks for all your posts on this setup.
                            Cheers.

Further to the same topic ....... do either of these systems ( or others like them ) pose any likelihood of "spiking" the vehicle's CPU? I'm considering buying the Piranah DBE140 unit and in their Youtube spiel they mention this possibility. Is this likely or just a sales pitch?
