  • ABS not working due to wheel bearing installed back to front???

    Hi guys,

I have a 2004 GXL auto which I have had a few little incidents with regards to ABS brakes not working. About 2 months ago I hit the brakes suddenly when a car pulled out in front of me. The brakes locked up and I didn't think anything about it other than a close call.
About a month ago the wife hit the brakes suddenly when coming up behind a tractor. The brakes locked up and car went sideways.
That sparked a memory that the car has always activated ABS in previous situations and was no longer operating.

I took the car to the local mechanic (nearest Toyo dealer over an hour away) and he did some investigation. He found that the speed sensors in the front wheels are not reading but the back ones are. He thinks that the ABS isnt working due to wheel bearings (which contain the speed sensors and ABS sensors) are put in back to front or not the ABS model ones.
After him telling me this I recalled that the front wheel bearings were replaced by a Toyota dealer in southern brisbane last year.

I rang the dealer and they state that the ABS warning light would have gone on and it isn't possible. The local mechanic has tested for the magnetic sensors in the bearings and found they are not any located in the position where they are meant to be. I thought it would be as simple as taking the bearings out and flipping them back to normal but apparently as soon as you removed them they collapse and you have to install new ones. I'm not too keen in getting the bearings taken out if they arnt backwards and if they are I wont be too pleased with the Toyota dealer that replaced them cos its going to cost me over $700 for a mistake they made.

Has anyone heard of this happening and is it possible for this to happen and the lights on the dash going 'haywire' as the dealer put it???????

My mechanic has contacted the dealer and I will find out what the plan is next week.

    cheers

    Jonny

*edit* Mods can you transfer this thread to 120 series brakes. Sorry.

    Issue sorted.
Mechanic pulled out the wheel bearings and they were the wrong part number. Non-abs model wheel bearings. Replaced with the correct bearings and ABS is working again.
So much for the ABS lights flashing if the wrong part was installed.
Bill and photos sent to Toyota to see whether they are coming to the party.

I had to have a wheel bearing replaced a few months ago. Mine was done by the Holden dealer that I bought the Prado from. When they fitted it, they said the ABS light was always on, and after investigating, they discovered that they had been supplied the wrong parts by Toyota. They sourced the correct one and fitted it. Thankfully I only had to pay for one lot of parts & labour. Sounds like it is a fairly common mistake to make though.

Problem: ABS light came on and car was pulling to one side when braking hard. Strange noise coming from front near brake callipers?
Solution : Pull of brake callipers and can’t find problem .
Solution part B : Take to local Mechanic this morning .
He finds, front wheel bearing is RS and chewing out ,It has also damaged the ABS sensor ,Bugger .
I haven’t pick this up yet but he advised me the wheel bearing was around $400 and the sensor ,once he gets one , will be about $300 + Labour .
The story will continue tomorrow .
