  • 4 inch suspension lift

    Hi all,

Im new here and was wondering if I could get some advice, whilst browsing the internet one night I discovered a website called extremelandcruiser.com and discovered that they do a 4 inch suspension lift kit for the 90 series. After speaking to their salesperson who assured me that the lift kit would fit, they sent me some pictures, however they sent me pictures of the american version of the 120 series and said the lift kit was the same for the 90. So I thought i would get some more advice. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Cheers Matt

But I love my prado, whats the difference in achieving 4 inches of lift through a body lift and suspension lift, rather than doing 4 inches of suspension, and I dont want a patrol !

I would be surprised if those strut spacers were able to be engineered here in Australia! I would show those pics to an engineer and get an opinion before doing too much more research.

I would also be surprised if a 120 kit just bolted straight onto a 90 without haveing to make modifications.

Another obsevateion, with the dropped crossmember how much extra clearance would this kit give? not a lot.

Look up Torrie72, he is in the Adelaide area and runs a 2" lift, plus 2" body lift and should be able to give you some good advice, his 90 is pretty sweet.

          Cheers Andrew

It wont fit, for starters, the front shocks on a 90 are shorter than a 120, the chassis is slightly wider on a 120.

Thank you for your help, I thought that it would be unusual that the platform would be the same but didn't want to say anything incase I was wrong.

No probs, I think I also need to clarify that when I say the 90 series front shock is shorter, it is when it is fully compressed, but when fully extended, it is the same length, so it infact has a longer stroke, but fitted into the vehicle will not fit right.

                  Hey b00stjunk1e,

90's and 120's will always require different kits, because of different vehicle weight, shock/coil lengths and of course; the chassis is different! However, you're not out of luck, there are still big lift options for the 90's...

                  1. Like in your pictures, big 4-6" lift kits from America which drop the front diff a few inches. It's done by cutting an existing cross member, and fitting of a new one. I know for a fact that a 4" kit was fitted in the Sydney region, but it wasn't engineered (and won't ever be). For research purposes; look for kits advertised for 96-2002 4runners (some Tacoma gear will fit as well).

                  2. Long arm kits, for racing. These require a huge amount of customisation, particularly with body work and the rear axle. These will never get engineered in Aus. Again, look for kits advertised for 96-2002 4runners and Tacoma's.

                  3. Suspension + body lift. The only option in terms of legalities (mine is engineered), but your vehicle must not have air bags. Body lifts mainly just allow you to fit larger tyres, for ground clearance, but a few other bits are lifted out of harms way as well - such as the rear tank, body panels, bumpers, sills.

In terms of which one is best? #2 is the only choice for high speed driving/racing. Both #1 and #3 help you fit larger tyres. #1 will allow for more rear suspension travel (no advantage in the front). #3 can be engineered.

Oh there's always one other option: a solid axle conversion, 100% custom. But like I've said before, if considering that, just buy a solid axle vehicle!!

Thanks for the other options, it looks like I'm going to do the body lift and suspension lift as I want my car to be roadworthy. How amazing would a solid front axle conversion be but like you said not worth all the money when you can just go and buy one.

4" for Prado 90 is possible

Hello all. I see this thread was not updated for a long time, but I decided to it. I have a 4" suspension lift on my Prado starting the beggining of this year. I already went throug all sorts of testing on it. Absolutly no issues. Only positive things. I really like how my Prado performs. So a couple words about what do I have. At the front I have Tough Dog TDC971+25mm spacers between strut and frame. Shock absorber is KYB monomax. Sway bar links are extended for 50mm. With 9500lbs winch(hidden instalation, stock bumper) it gives me true 100mm of lift. So we can say 4". Plus diffdrop 30mm. At rear I have Tough Dog TDC734HL+25mm spacers(because these springs are too short for my rear shocks) and KYB Monomax from TLC80. Adjustable panhard rod(handmade just like tough dog). Also I have extended handbrake cable mounting bracket. Rear sway bar links are from 130 4Runner. Actually they are also a bit short for me, but I still have not extended brake lines, so these links are a kind of stoppers to avoid brake lines and ABS wiring damage. But even with these "short" links rear suspension travel is just enormous. From the side it looks like the rear axle just took apart... Lift at the rear is even a bit more then 4". And as Isaid this setup works just great. Stability on the road is very very good. I can easily drive 120km/h on the gravel with abslutely no issues. Tires are still 265/75/15. But I already tried 285/75/16 it fits well. I can tell that I almost do not have rubbing even with extremal suspension travel. But anyway I think I am going to order 1,5" bodylift kit for my Prado and buy 285/75/16 or 305/70/16 for the next season. I believe it will be the top for my Prado. But I know one man, he has 35" tires and who knows, may be one day I will decide that 33" is not enough ))))) I will try to add some photos, hopefully I will manage to do it

From your page it seems you've destroyed a CV joint, true? Just one so far?

Thanks Glen! I should say that further modifications of my Prado will be done under impression after reading all your thread about build-up )) It's really valuable thread. Thank you! ))
About CVs, no it is not just one. I already have couple. But they were done with just 2" suspension. The second one was my mistake, it was just because of spiining of the wheel and then touch the ground. Just simply my mistake. But the first one is different. I killed it on the sand, driving a little bit up on the small sand hill, low range, diff blocked and CRACK!!!!! I was really dissapponted that moment. Also I have already changed my front diff. It started to make strong noise, I found a couple teeths broken on planetary gear. It seams to me that it happens the same time I crushed the 2nd CV.
