It was a pretty sweet deal, the mounting kit was a freebie when I ordered the rack at the 4x4 show, apparently a never to be repeated offer. Even got a discount on the RRP of the platform. I've also picked up a shovel holder and a hi lift bracket.

You did very well JPH. It is low, tidy and the right price! The same setup now retails about $1043 plus fitting. How does it feel strength-wise? Could you stand on it if you had too?

Hmmm the rack feels solid, i only fitted it on Monday, but so far seems nice and quiet. I could stand on it but currently would be over the allowed 100kg of roof carring capacity! I have the large rhino bag that suits it too so will be interesting loading that and going for a spin. $1043 is a bit of cash, but as I always say, you get what you pay for, very happy with it indeed.

Just measured the rack it sits 58 mm above the factory rails, so pretty low really. Here's a shot from the back showing the cross rails.

Just wondering, I thought it was 75kg (including the platform) with factory rails / 2 cross bars, 100kg if you have 3 bars

Thats exactly what I have been looking for for my 120, I kept getting told you can't fit a Pioneer rack to factory rails, good to see they have finally released something that will do it.

Don't know why Rhino didn't use the CXB legs instead of the SXB legs. The CXB legs are meant to take the heavy duty cross bars.
                  http://www.rhinorack.com.au/Vehicle_...1380_4125.aspx

The cross bars on the Pioneer Platform Rack looks like the bottom half of the HD crossbars. If they supplied another 2 cross bars, the same that comes with the normal Pioneer rack, then those crossbars would bolt straight onto the CXB legs. And the crossbars will be pop-riveted to the planks (same as the normal Pioneer rack) instead of using the plastic tabs as used in these fitting kits (http://www.rhinorack.com.au/AccSubCa...it_223_35.aspx) to hold the planks down to the Aerobars.

You could be right, I will look into it, if it is the case there is definetly no chance of me being allowed up there!

I am also having a close look at the Tradesman OVAL platform as installed on Emergency 4WD vehicles. It looks to have a mesh over bar base, no sides, and secured through their standard leg brackets (three each side) directly into the factory side rail fixing points (after the rails are removed). Size roughly 2000x1200. Able to carry 150kg (strong enough for JPH?) and same low profile. Does anyone have any advice; good and bad?

The carrying capacity of the roof is dependent on the car, not the roof rack. This capacity also includes the roof rack. So no point putting on a steel rack and reducing what you can put up there.

Also the roof capacity is stated as the load you carry when you drive. Not when you are standing on it or sleeping in it in a roof top tent when the car isn't moving.

Definetly strong enough (including the weight of the rack) with plenty of spare! What I liked about the Pioneer Platform was the ability to take it off if I wanted and still having the roof rails there. Then you're not mucking around trying to seal holes etc. I can also just take the platform off and still have two roof bars. The alluminium rack is also lighter than the steel one, so I can easily take it on and off myself.

I'm also looking to install the Rhino Pioneer Rack to the Factory rails for the purpose of a roof top tent + spare wheel. I understand that with this setup I can load 100kg at 100km/h? Would the factory rails be strong enough for static use with 2 people on the roof top tent at approx 200kg in total.

                              Hi Dennis,

I have the Tradesman Oval steel Roof Rack, not the flat bed but I'm very happy with the rack + designed and built in Melbourne which is very rare these days. I might be stupid for spending the extra instead of getting a cheaper import but I hope to have the rack for a long time and the Tradesman Engineering folk were very helpful in tailoring the design for me as I was one of the early adopters. My advice is call them directly.

                              Regards
                              Rob

Tauras, As amts has stated and as i believe you are ok sleeping its just a moving weight limit. so 100kg for when driving but should be ok for 200kg sleeping while the vehicle is stationary.

JPH. that is exactly what I was looking for, however when I was at the 4x4 show, I thought it was explained to me that you can use the SXB legs and mount them directly to the Pioneer rack, thus slightly lowering the height but the height of the cross bars. You are right that its then more hassle to take the rack on and off and put the cross bars back on.
I do like that set up and think this is what I will go with. Now just deciding on the 1500 or 1900 length tray. Any thoughts anyone?
