I'm now going down the path of getting my steering wheel re-trimmed. I remember thinking that if I had a Kakadu I wouldn't have this problem because of the wood trim....wrong.

Looks like the problem is not confined to the GXL steering, one of the trimmers I visited showed me a Kakadu steering wheel with even worse problems shown in the picture below.

The trimmer also said that the wear was due to leather quality so I will look at pursuing this further with the ACCC.

Thought I would add to the thread, my 2011 Prado had similar wear to that of krypto only a lot worse. At the 50k service I brought it to the attention of my dealer, who didn't give me any grief. He said he would need to write up a report for Toyota Australia for warranty. Happy to say it was approved no drama, despite being outside the 2 year period.
Sad part of the whole deal is that's now my third warranty claim! (Rear main oil seal, tail shaft and steering wheel.)

Dealer was Smithfield Service (Pacific Toyota, Cairns)

      Cheers,
      Dusty
