Apologies for the late reply mate, real life and works been hectic lately.

No noticeable change in the standard Toyota temp gauge, I don't run a scan gauge so acturate measurements are out. I did do a fair bit of towing a trade trailer over the last month and didn't notice anything then either. Did start blowing a little smoke though.

Air flows not overly restrictive by the looks of it. Still doesn't heat up at all when the prado isn't moving either in the hot weather, until the standard cooler which becomes almost untouchable!!! Outlet side of the FMIC still feels cold.

The problemm I have with a FMIC was brought home to me when I was having my 2009 manual D4D dyno tuned and the guy was running it up with a whopping big fan setup in front of the thing.
Puting my hand against the grill I could fell how little air was flowing past the spots, bullbar and crap and into the mickey mouse air ducts. I reckon the factory TMIC without a bonnett scoop is about the only design flaw the 120 D4D has!!!
So i've left the intercooler as stock but fitted a hilux scoop, steinbauer chip plus Beaudesert 2.75" exhaust - and it works a treat. The most obvious difference being the drivability,- more torque down low and better tractability through the rev range. Great to tonk along at low revs in a higher gear on outback gravel roads.
Would like to try a larger TMIC though - any thought?

Sorry to dig up an old thread, but I figured this was better than starting up a new post on a similar topic.

I've read through a few of the threads on intercoolers, injectors etc and wanted to ask for opinions.
        1st Background & our plans:
We have a 2009 - 120 series Prado D4D Grande and she's got 70,000 km's on her. She has pretty much just been a mum's city taxi, prior to our recent purchase.
We've fitted a rear bar and snorkel as our intentions are to do a bit of touring initially, towing a camper that will weigh in at around 1,300kg's fully loaded. Then in the next year or two we are planning more of an outback adventure. Which will then have a bullbar, better tyres, lift kit and a winch fitted. In between all of this we will also be doing a few local 4wd tracks, most likely nothing to extreme.
        Discussion Point:
I am after a bit of feedback in regards to FMIC v's the stock TMIC with Hilux scoop v's the TMIC with Hilux scoop & a fan.
I was leaning towards the FMIC as by the time I pay to get the hilux scoop fitted (professionally) I reckon I'd be up for around $1,000 where as the FMIC kit is around $1,500 & I'd be more comfortable to fit that one.
Until I read a blurb on the Cross Country website that they consider the TMIC with a fan to be the best option for 4wd'ing.

So in my opinion I think one of them needs to be done. I'm not overly fussed in the power benefits more so focused on making the car more reliable/reducing the injector issues. But I'm really stuck between the two, so I thought I'd throw it out to see what do you guys think?

        Cheers,
        Sean.

Spend $28 on a Techstream and monitor your injectors routinely. No point doing any of the listed mods unless you can keep an eye on these pesky injectors. Mine went bang at 73,000km. I have the hilux scoop and I really doubt whether it makes that much of difference. The same will apply to the FMIC - you still need to check the injector values and also ensure that the oil pump pickup screen isn't blocked before you spend any money on further engine mods.

Well put basically the injector program is technical, and the injectors themselves are on the outside, installed not within the musician cover so there is not the problems with electronics and the like.

Would you please put that into Australian English so that your point might make a little more sense? What is a musician cover? I don't think my Prado has one.

                  Matt,

The best way to improve from these mods is to change your exhaust system to the one left over from MLC. If it doesn't boost your power, it will boost MLC's ego

                      Hi All
Looking at doing the FMIC from CC4X4. The car has a DP Chip and a Taipan XP 3inch exhaust fitted. I'm not keen on fitting a bonnet scoop so this limits the fitting of fans and larger TMICs. I've read as much info as I can find and spoked to CC4X4 about the pros and cons about this mod. Just looking at other people's feedback as to whether this is worth doing or just put up with the stock set up.
                      Cheers
                      Wayne

WSP, I don't think matt logs on anymore as he now resides overseas. I am not aware of any other member doing the same mod.
