  • Electric Mirror

I jumped into my car the other day and the driver's side mirror was pointing out so I wound the window down and pulled the mirror back. It appeared to be a little bit loose but I didn't worry about it too much. I went for a drive later that day and again the mirror was back in the same position. It appears that every time I start the car the mirror moves forward. I went to Toyota today and it appears that the mirror has been knocked forward, typical car park incident. I asked them if they can fix it and they said no that it is a complete unit and quoted a replacement price of $2,054. Apparently it is a gear problem within the mirror tat breaks, which you can't replace.

I was told that it s not a warranty job as the mirror had been knocked. Interestingly I thought the mirrors could go forward but apparently this will break them.

Has anyone experienced this problem and found a solution to repair rather than pay the $2,000 odd to replace the whole thing.

How can they prove the mirror was knocked forward? Your word vs their's I would think.

Good reason to fold your mirrors in though, especially in carparks which I do always.

        Hi,

I had my RHS mirror replaced and cost ~$950 installed totally my fault so I couldn't use the warranty angle, yes still bloody expensive but had the same issue as you kept moving forward when starting the car. Mine is only a GXL so maybe the VX mirror is more special hence the 2k price tag, the only difference would be the VX mirror has the heater - $1k is a very expensive heater if thats the case . Its a real PIA but needs to be fixed, at $2k you might want to claim via insurance and then forget about it.

        Regards
        Rob

Had the same problem due to w***kers after a football game. Pain in the backside and had to claim on insurance.

The 2 grand cost is for a Kakadu side mirror (due to drive motor and camera I am told), the VX should cost you about $965. According to the guys at Melville Toyota, the Toyota parts computer has a well known error which says all VX's have the Kakadu mirror, which is why you were quoted the higher price.

The correct part number for a VX mirror outer assembly should be 8794060d10.

When I get time I will pull the broken one apart to see if it is fixable and post results here.

Thanks for that, I am currently traveling around Australia with cloth tape wrapped around the mirror to stop it from moving. When Toyota had a look at it they unplugged it and charged me $66 for the privilege. As I will be on the road for 1 or 2 years I may get some time in my travels to pull it apart if it is worthwhile.

            Best wishes

This is going to be one of those good news, bad news posts......

I'm pretty sure I have found why the mirror doesn't stop where it is supposed to - see photo

              The bad news is;

              1. It is difficult to get to this stage without losing your temper.
              2. It is difficult to get to this stage without breaking any of the plastic clips which hold the various pieces in place.
              3. Attempting to take the kink out of the aluminium ring/washer only results in the ring breaking.
              4. I cannot find a replacement part for the ring/washer. I'm not even sure what it's called or what it should look like when new.

Looks like it is all bad news. Are you saying that as a result of an aluminum ring being bent the mirror has to be replaced? If this is the case then this is criminal that a replacement part cannot be purchased.

Given my temper I will have no chance. Are you able to give an overview of the process to get to that point.

                  Thanks

The following PDF's should help getting the mirror assembly apart. Once it is apart you will have to separate the motor from the gearbox, and then pull the gearbox apart. The motor and gearbox covers were clipped in place as well as being glued.

The only damage I could see in mine was the aluminium ring. Everything else, other than the clips I broke, looks OK.

If it happens to me again I will disconnect the drive motor and fix the mirror in place by drilling and tapping a screw through the drive plate(?)

So the overall design is pretty poor. My daughter has a kluger grande and the mirror can be moved back and forward with ease and always comes back to it's original position. Thanks again for your help.

The previous owner of my Kakadu was quoted $1935 plus fitting to replace the mirror he knocked on a fence/post, got the pricing from the service history. It was fixed prior to me purchasing the vehicle so not sure if the whole thing was replaced in the end or just repaired. I was happy when I discovered they can be folded in from inside the car via a switch next to the L/R adjustment switch, just need to remember to do it when leaving the car in public places now.

I can buy 2 clearview mirrors in chrome for $795 for the pair. They are mirrors which slide out for towing which is what I do, I am currently towing a van around Australia. The mirrors are electric have the built in indicators and should anything break are able to supply spare parts. Have a look at www.clearviewmirrors.com.au

Clearview also stock about 40 spare parts for their mirrors (take note Toyota). They also show videos on how to remove the old mirror, install the clearview mirror and vice versa. See:

We only have a GXL but after reading this thread I have just told the other half that she had better start pressing that little black button inside the car. $950 installed is still not something I would be happy handing over to the service dept.
