Another one for the Icom. I have a number of these (house, vehicles, machinery etc) and have never had any problems with them. They are a great unit.

I have the GME, works a treat....probably got conned by a salesman but it has never let me down. My mate in another Prado had his radio crap itself in Cooktown on our way to the Cape this year and the only thing he could get fitted quickly was a Uniden...and it worked well also.150 Silver Diesel GXL Auto with ECB Bullbar, Toyota Factory towbar, Black Widow Drawer system with Fridge slide and cargo barrier, GME UHF 3340 Radio, Waeco 50 Litre Fridge, Rhino Racks and Rhino Basket, ARB Awning, IPF XS Spotties, ABR Sidewinder Dual Battery system,Airtec Snorkel, Bilstien Shockies, King Springs, Poly Airbags and BFG A/T''s. Now towing a semi offroad Lotus Freelander 18.6 Van, with all the bells and whistles.

In one of the tractors we have one of the GME units (older 40 channel)...with everything on the handpiece (bar the speaker) and it is the biggest POS....it will be the last GME I buy (we have bloody heaps of them in trucks, tractors and utes) It turns it self on and off, the speaker constantly mutes itself (and I can't hear it half time over the tractor), the rubber on the handpiece is wearing off.....etc etc. And I have been informed by my UHF repairer that they are having a heap of problems with one of the internal boards.....he has stopped selling GME and gone back to Uniden.....and so have I, cheaper and bloody reliable little uhf's.
To answer your q, I reckon the icom would be a better unit.

I believe GME do not do a speaker microphone combination set in a hand piece. And certainly the older TX 472 range had the speaker in the front of the main body unit. The new units need a remote speaker or rely on the remote unit to be heard. CheersCrystal Pearl Altitude 150 Landcruiser Prado. TJM sensor bar, brush guard, side steps. KM2 BFG on GXL alloys. Kaymar bar, Drifta and MSA fridge slide. ARB locker and compressor, and MK11 compressor and fuel filter bracket.

Does anyone know of a Sydney area retailer for Icom? The Icom website lists a few places - mainly aero or marine suppliers - and their websites don't list the 440N as an item that they stock.
I was hoping to get one this week and install asap. An eBay purchase is going to take a while to get here.
