Thanks VZ for the info. I do like your ECB & Jeffers TJM low loop bars but am a little confused. Are you upgrading your 2012 Prado & getting a new bar or just changing to the EGR bar on your current model?

$500 for the EGR sounds heaps better than the factory bar at $730 + fitting price I was quoted yesterday from Toyota dealer. They both look stronger than the factory one but I haven't seen one physically ass yet to know where & how it is mounted. Also I cannot see any brackets or pre drilled mounting holes on the factory bars for lights or antenna (I'll have to follow this up).

I will pm you as well as there are some other questions I would like to throw at you rather than going off this thread topic.

Also just wondering if anyone that has the factory nudge has any comments on theirs particularly in relation to its strength at the mounts etc.

Thanks VZ - obviously I didn't read the date.

Re the open request for info on the factory nudge bars - don't bother am not interested in them, will now focus on the ECB & 'Jeffers' style TJM nudge bar

          G'day Vic,

My nudge bar is mounted via 4 points on the vehicle, 2 through the thin black grille mounted directly to the chassis and 2 support mounts under the bottom of the bumper.
I bought my TJM Nudge and fit it myself. This involved completely removing the whole bumper and grille and about 3 hours labour. I would do it again, but you definitely need a second person to help you.
If your not into doing it yourself, I was quoted $600 by TJM for a complete supply and fit which I thought wasn't too bad a deal.
My nudge bar is very secure and I don't notice any vibration and the bar doesn't interfere with the front parking sensors at all.
I hope this info helps with your decision.

          Cheers,

          Jeff

            Thanks Jeff.

Great colour & a mighty fine looking rig & set up.

The best price I got for a genuine Toyota nudge bar was $660 (can't remember if this price was ex GST & unsure if quoted as fitted) but ranged up to $825. Either way I am happy that the thread was posted & I am off the gen Toyota one anyway. Your nudge bar suits the car very well.

At $600 odd fitted I'm still in front but would probably want to give it a go at fitting myself as well.

Are you happy with your whispbars? I'm looking at throwing on kayaks, surfboards & ski gear with a view to a tray maybe a pod. One PP member showed me his pics of the Jarram Tracklander roof tray. Looked fantastic & said he wanted something that could be removed in 15 minutes or so rather than beoing left on just as I would prefer. I also like the look of the prorack s series from supercheap Auto. Do you carry much on top? What can they handle?

I might have a chance at buying a second hand 2012 Kak with only a few thousand kms & gen towbar (no other acc) but unsure what to offer. Apparently as a Toyota family member he got 20% off & is looking to sell for what he paid. The hitch for me is that I won't get the capped priced servicing, only get the balance of the new car warranty & not our Crystal Pearl colour choice.Ohh decisions decisions.

              Hey Vic,

I think from memory the TJM Low loop Bar is about $450 to purchase and fit yourself. It comes with instructions for fitting and its pretty straight forward, but definitely a 2 man job handling the front bumper off and back on again.

As for the Whisbars, I have only ever carried something on them once. The load was only about 20kg-30kg and they handled it with no worries at all. I like to have them up there for the "Just in case" situations. I am planing to remove the whisbars and the factory rails in the next month or so as I am planing on permanently installing a Rhino Pioneer Rack.

              http://www.rhinorack.com.au/AccSubCa...rm_489_68.aspx

These should be almost the same height as what the factory roof rails are now, or only 10mm-20mm higher. I have a Hannibal Roof Top Tent and I want to be able to put it up on the roof when I need it without removing the platform rack all the time.

The Kakadu you're looking at sounds like a good deal. Keep in mind that you can generally negotiate about 10% off with the dealer for a brand new vehicle, so 20% off on a vehicle thats 12 months old with a few thousand km's should be fair, but I'd be checking out CarSales.com.au to see how the price compares with other Kakadu's on the market. You might be able to negotiate a bit better with a bit of pricing knowledge up your sleeve. I'm sure you have been doing your homework though

Good luck with it all Vic, If there is anything I can help you with feel free to flick me a message.

              Cheers,

              Jeff

Thanks again Jeff for all the info.

At $450 the deal just keeps on getting better for the nudge bars.

I've found that if the rack are up there already, I'm more likely to take advantage of them but having said that, a nice big tray just seem so much more useful. I mentioned the Jarram Tracklander to a dealer(who had never heard of them) because they could be taken off & he said they wouldnt be able to without taking off the roof liner. Will have to investigate this one further.

as for the 'Kakadu deal', i've been looking at prices on car sales, car point & trading post & it is tempting but still got to work some things out 1st.

Really appreciate the info from you guys & your kind offer to assist further if required

                Cheers

                Vic

Mate you are better off reading what people are doing on here than listening to an ill informed ignorant dealer. Remove the liner is just BS. You can do what I did and retain the factory roof rails or fit a Rhino platform (again keeping the rails) or any number of systems that replace the rails.

Why no capped price servicing Vic? If you're getting balance of new car warranty then I would have thought you'd get the CPS as well, I did. Then again I bought my 2009 Kaka from a dealer.

What colour is the one you are looking at? I have the silver pearl and love it.

Mine came with a bullbar so I haven't looked at nudge bars myself but knowing the car parks around here a nudge bar wouldn't cut it, bastards keep backing into the corners!

Hi MJ, You're right there is so much info & advice I have gained from this site than any interaction with any of the sales guys I have dealt with to date.

A little while back on another thread, you had shown me pics of your tray so I mentioned the Jarram tracklander to the dealer (thinking I might work it into the deal). I had followed up with the guys from Jarram to get prices etc because I liked it so much. The nuff dealer was a senior sales guy but he obviously knew very little on the Prado.

Jarram sent me two prices. One model bolts onto the existing rails like yours & one that bolts directly onto the roof (you must remove the existing rails though). The difference between the 2 is the load weight at 78kg or 200kg rating. My preference was for a tray to be able to be removed & attached when required with little effort & minimal time (again like your current setup)

The reason Fido that I wouldn't get capped price servicing is that his wife apparently works for Toyota. This was just a chance encounter I had with the guy because I was admiring (maybe coveting) his Prado & when I started asking him about it he said if I was serious he was looking to sell. He told me his wife was a Toyota employee & they bought it at the staff rate of 20% off. He didn't tell me about the NO capped price service & it was only when I read the fine print on the Toyota website & confirmed it by entering his VIN # to read "This vehicle is not entitled to the CPS'. So now I will get the prices from Toyota to price the services & see what it will cost for that period.

You're a bugger Fido because up until now I didn't really think about the corners of the car & was settled on the TJM low loop. The colour of his is Silver Pearl. My colour of choice is the Crystal Pearl.

                      Vic

That's odd, I would have thought Toyota staff would get it.

Well since I've owned the car (7 months) someone has put a nice scrape on the front corner of the bullbar and some other muppet has hit the back corner on the bumper. The bullbar just got scratched whereas the bumper was punched in and had to be repaired. If I'd had a steel bar on the back it probably would have just copped a scratch. The pearl paintwork is harder to colour match so paint repairs become expensive. I live in the inner suburbs of Melbourne where parking spaces tend to be tight, lanes between spaces are narrow, and people just don't know how to park; basically a recipe for trouble.

                          .

That's what I thought but decided to call up Toyota Aus. & asked to be sure. Apparently there is a disclaimer in the fine print. I'm pretty sure he said staff also get a discount on service as a general rule just not the CPS well.

Yeah I found that out too inadvertently. Just happened to ask a couple of panel repairers as I was taking in a car to be quoted on for repairs. They said all the metallic paints are buggers to match up. Obviously white is the best to be able to touch up & not show up the scratches or dirt as much. but... I do like that Crystal Pearl colour. Apart from encasing in a bubble I suppose we will have our share of these too - at least you have some frontal protection, now I must rethink my options.

So do we & those tight spaces are what my wife is concerned about.

No scratches or bumps on my 15 month young Prado... and being a rep I'm on the road and in and out of car parks all day every day

                            Just my 2 cents
