  • Battery fails when switching more stuff on?

    Hi All,
    I am a prado novice!
I bought a 90 series 2001 GXL recently and have had some weird things happen in my Prado.
Firstly when I was driving the Prado back from Canberra where I bought her, she shut down when I went to turn the headlights on. This happened a few times ad everytime we pulled over I had to jiggle the main battery and the system would come back to life.
Well I took all leads off the batteries and cleaned the posts and terminals, and then put a piece of timber under the main battery and tightened it all back up.
It fixed it for about 2 weeks and it is happeneing again.
Now when I apply the breaks or turn the indicators on the radio shorts out for a few seconds.
There is a thin red wire running from the battery which seems to be causing the issue but I am not too sure.

I will be taking it to HyTech in Alexandria for its first full service since I have owned it and will be getting a full diagnostic report at the same time.
Do you think it might just be the leads that need attention, or should I be more concerned.
I am also a bit scared on the cost of the service as I wanted to purchase a fridge/freezer, inverter, and roof racks, as I thought they would be the most improtant accessories first, oh and a winch and recovery kit too.
    Any advice would be great.

    Cheers,
    kb

Rough guess the battery is RS and I would be replacing it. Id first check to make sure the alternator is pumping out the correct voltage with multimeter. You dont say wether petrol or diesel but both my 90's use to push out 14.2V at the + terminal. Reason I say battery is when you have called on the extra power for lights it cant supply it so kills other things. There is so many electronic components that require their full voltage to operate correctly. I may be miles away from the problem but if it was mine thats where I would be starting from......Im sure there is some one on here that has a huge knowledge of the electrical on a 90 series....Cheers Steve

      Thanks Steve.
I had NRMA come out and the guy checked the batteries, alternator etc, and he said they were all sweet as.
      It is the Diesel.

Check for a dodgy earth, both battery and engine.

Yep, whenever your hear "gremlins and electrical" in the same sentence then an earth problem is high on the list of suspects.

I may be way off..... But maybe the battery fitted in your car has the posts located further in on the battery instead of near the back edge, thus stretching your cables to enable the terminals to fit over the battery posts. If you had to jiggle the cranking battery to get the electrics to work properly or were losing power when braking, or with some electrical components when others were turned on, I'd say you've got some fractured wiring not conducting a full electrical current leading directly to your positive terminal due to stretching because the posts are placed further away than the wiring will reach properly. Your cranking battery could be very slightly too small in length & width for the battery tray as well as being slightly too short in height, not allowing the top clamp to hold it in effectively. Maybe only on one side (the back), allowing the battery to slide forward when braking. The main electrical wiring in my Prado leading to the positive battery post doesn't have any more length to stretch a further few millimeters if I needed it to. All the same sized batteries from different brands are very slightly different in length, width and height and the posts are located slightly different distances from the edge of the battery. My 1 year old Century battery has the posts located further in from the edge than the previous battery that was fitted when I bought the car.

Brett, while i wont discount your theory, as its plausible, the temporary fix to such an issue is a disaster!

Broken cables cause higher resistances, and this in turn leads to heat and subsequently fire... If this is in fact the cause, then fixing it now would be the solution as opposed to hiding it and replacing the car later.

Check your cable for hot spots with a thermal imaging camera, while its under load, to prove or disprove this as a possible cause.

Thanks Matty, what I meant was until he fixes it (I'll reword that sentence). I could see how it was missinterpreted though as I didn't explain myself clearly enough

                    Hi Brett,
Thanks and I knew what you meant.
This sounds like it is exactly what is happening.
I will be getting pink slip done tomorrow then major service the week after at an Auto Electrical/mechanic shop.
He will sort it out, just hope i don't need a mortgage to pay for it.

Did you ever get this sorted, if so what was the issue? Never know, might help the next bloke.
