  • Xmas came early - TRD Supercharger installed

Well it's been some time of procrastinating over whether or not I will put a S/C on... Originally I was going to import from the USA and bolt on myself, but I discovered a few things didn't line up and there were a few hoses and brackets I needed to change. I also factored in that I have almost no time to do things on my 4x4 anymore due to work and family so I decided getting Bullet Cars to do the work was the way to go.

The following was on the shopping list
    1. Supercharger with smaller puller upgrade (7lbs boost)
    2. Bullet Ultimate Exhaust (to replace my freebee which was rusting badly - had holes in it)
    3. 2 Bar Map sensor and Dyno Tune (already had Chip Torque Xede processor)

After 3 days I had my 4x4 back, the end result was very pleasing. I now have tons of torque from idle up to redline, taking off is a breeze and overtaking is a lot of fun! On the hwy now it holds 5th going up hills on cruise control, and fuel economy looks to be the same so far. As far as actual stats, I do have the a dyno before and after, however the before was with smaller tyres and this makes a massive difference... In fact it was because of the tyres that I "had" to get a S/C

    Before - Chip and 2 1/2" exhaust on 32" MTZ's - 98 octane

    After - S/C, 2 3/4" exhaust on 33" KM2s - 95 octane

Not heaps of power kw difference, mainly due to the larger tyres (they say ~20kw at the wheels), and ~10kw because of lower octane fuel and about double that in for Nm... Still the drivability has gone through the roof - having all that torque down low makes all the difference. Unfortunately they only graphed from 3500rpm when the torque converter was locked up, so you can't see whats down below! I do have a manual lockup switch but they didn't use it

I'm driving down Central Coast for xmas so I will be able to test hwy economy properly, then up to Fraser towing the boat for New Years - this will be the real test for performance and economy driving up the beach!

Hope you all enjoy your xmas

Some more pics... apparently you need a blue plate for S/C and exhaust

    Ceramic Coated Headers

High flow Cats into 2 1/4 primarys

Intercooler just fits with water pump very close to my winch.... probably a little too close, I may have to move.

New to the forum but have found much valuable info here already. Mine is an '05 V6 4.0 all stock but scheduled to get a TRD supercharger early in the new year. I'm keen to hear how your trip went DoubleD.

Who's doing the install? I'd be interested to see your results, should be big increase over mine with stock wheels. Post Dyno when you can. I'll be posting updates after both trips on performance VS economy, would also be good to see your fuel consumption before/after.

I'm in Victoria and still researching for an installer. I also run LPG which is okay for the s/c but makes the install a bit more tricky. My Prado lives an easy life except for the occasional tow of my 1 ton hot air balloon trailer.

I'm very keen to charge mine next year but 10k for 20rwhp I find hard to justify. I would get 8-10rwhp with a set of extractors. I know Dynos don't always tell the full story but I need to re think.

@Kakadaz, I think you'll get more gains from a stock setup than what DoubleD is getting with his bigger wheels. Bullet estimates a 45% increase. For me I'm really keen on the extra torgue and driveability.

DoubleD, a question : Is the blower whine very noticable when cruising? I like the sound but was wondering if it would become annoying over several hours on the road.

Tyres would make a difference but mine are nearly 33" as well.

Sounds sweet... Anything supercharged would be fun to drive...

I might see you around on the Coast over the break. We are not going anywhere, well, no plans as of today, but that can change.

My first dyno was with 32's, then the next dyno with the s/c was with 33's it was a bigger increase than what shows... The biggest difference is the torque low down, you can't see on the graph due to the auto, but from manuals they dyno, you get peak torque around 2-2.5k. At the end of the day it's all percentages, it will be a ~50% improvement on what you have now. I highly recommend
