  • Rear fuel tank bash plate check

    Hey folks,
not sure if this has been mentioned before but it might be worth taking the bash plates off the fuel tanks and checking them out every now and then, i did this on the weekend and found a little bit off surface rust.

a quick sand back and some heavy duty cold gal primer and a new coat of paint and she is all beautiful again

    Cheers,
    Scott.

Its also worth checking for stones in between the gaurd and the tank. In my first Prado I got a stone in there, not sure how long it was there but after doing the 1100km crossing of the Tanami desert and filling up in Halls creek (over $2 a litre) diesel started to run out the bottow where the stone had worn a hole in the tank.

Lucky we made it across the desert without it leaking, the hole obviously appeared after the rear tank was empty.

I always check the bash plates for debris now, haven't had an issue since but you never know.

    Cheers Andrew

I amuse a fellow Prado owner who lives nearby and never goes off the hardtop by periodically panelbeating that plate on the lawn with a sledgehammer, it's always interesting to see what is caught up when I drop it.

Trying to match the debris with past trips is a bit of a CSI moment.

      Cheers

Hi there. I know this is an old thread ... but i took off my bashplate today (2004 Petrol) to weld up a few cracks around the mounting points & bash out a few dents. Yes there were about a dozen stones in there! Before i re-install I was wondering if there is any value in inserting a thin sheet of foam between the tank & bashplate to help stop any stones getting in there????
        cheers .. Drew

May trap moisture in there instead though
