  • First UHF install..........ever!

    Hey guys,

just installed a GME 3520 UHF in the rig today and thought i would share my experience.

Was a bit nervous about it as I haven't done anything like this before, I was one of the "too hard basket" kind of guys. But after a little tuition from the old boy, got it done and looks smick. Took a bit of time, but was actually quite easy and thanks to all the info here on PP, went off without a hitch.

Would just like to thank all the people who post there build ups, with pics, to show us noobs it is not that hard (and save a heap of cash to spend on more toys). Don't know if i would have to patience to stop and take a photo every 5 mins.

Also if you are thinking about giving it a go yourself, do it. You might have to spend a little cash initially to buy the tools needed ie. soldering iron, crimping tools etc, but the next time you go to do it there all still there.

    Will post some pics asap.

    Cheers
    Josh

Have just attached everything with velcro for the minute to see if i am happy with the location, then will screw down later. Or if velcro stays put might just keep that.

Nice neat install Josh. What's the thing on the steering wheel? I thought it was illegal to have anything on the steering wheel unless you are disabled and have a knob for steering control but I'm not 100% on that.

The hardest part is finding a place for the main unit that is out of the way. My current UHF is an Icom 440N and I think the main unit is under the shifter surround somewhere. It was installed in the 150 when I bought it so I'm not 100% sure but the little RJ45 socket connector for the mike comes out from under there so it's a reasonable assumption.

I had a remote head unit like yours in my 95 series (currently listed in the For Sale section) and I had the main unit under the seat with the remote head screwed to the plastic surround between the shifter and the centre console box. When I pulled it out I was pretty surprised how easy it would have been to install myself. I was ripped off by ARB for the original install me thinks, from memory it was ~$350 just for the install as I supplied the unit.

gday fido, the weird looking thing on the steering wheel is a wireless PTT button, also with channel changer buttons as well. I thought it would be out of the way but i have had it on there for a few days now and already starting to piss me off. Might take it off and just chuck it back on when needed. Not sure about the legality of it all, might have to have a look at that.

I was worried about locating the main unit near where other peoples feet might be but i think it is far enough out of the way so the hugs and kisses wont destroy it.

Sounds like the new location in your rig is right out of the way. Winner.

Have you tried using the ptt yet? A few of our new tractors have come with them and they're absolutely useless as people can't hear you, might be better in car though, not sure.

Ah OK, still it's a bit bulky for my liking.

Except when you need to access it, then it will be a pain. Thankfully that shouldn't be too often.
