  • Holden V6 Conversion

Hi all, I'm wondering if anyone has done a 3.8l ecotec commodore engine swap into the prado, I have the 2.7l engine in mine currently but would love some more power, I have been looking at the Toyota engines but they are much more costly. Also the 4 runner and prado share the same chassis and drivetrain if I'm correct so these engine mounts and bellhouse adaptor should fit. As for wiring im an apprentice electrician and do a lot of industrial automation so car wiring is easier. Any advice however would be greatly appreciated

I'll put it out there and suggest a holden v8.
Alternatively, wouldn't you be better off selling your car and putting the extra coin into a 3.4l prado? you would likely end up in front and then have something completely toyota still.
2004 Prado GXL. v6 auto, ARB deluxe bar, exhaust, 2" EFS lift kit, Outback Acc rear bar,
rallye 2000 spots, roof mount dvd, dig_options stereo, toyota roof bars.
    More to come!

The series II Buik 3800 should fit in the Prado engine bay. I probably wouldn't bother with those Marks V6 engine mounts. They're for the 3VZ-E anyway, so you might be better getting some custome made, unless Marks do some for the Holden donk.

Alternately this looks like a much simpler, bolt-on power upgrade:

I thinking the V6 Holden would have no more power and less low down torque than the Prado V6, the conversion in the 4 runner was to generally replace a 4cyl motor.

The series II 3800 actually has more torque at low rpms and has a flatter torque curve with higher peak torque and carries it through to higher rpm than the 5VZ-FE.

I would love a v8 or a supercharger, but unfortunatley am still on my p plates and will be for quite a while and in SA your not allowed v8s, superchargers or turbos. The other reason for the holden engine is more power and flatter torque, also a really common engine you can pick up parts for them easily. I have considered upgrading but have spent alot on my car already and its not worth selling it and as a 1st year apprentice it takes me long enough to buy stuff for the car as it is.

Long term aswell the holden v6 has many upgrade parts to get more power. and whilst reading through other adaptors on marks website the 4 cylinder engine mount is often coupled with a v6 engine mount an this allows the engine to fit, i will be calling them tommorrow and will post how i go.

I thought on your P's you couldn't drive any vehicle that had been modified for more power, might pay to double check that before taking the plunge.

Yeah i have heard that aswell, but have spoken to someone at transport sa and they said as long as its not a v8 or has forced induction they see it as p plate legal the only thing now is to find out regulations about installing the engine and how to make it pass regency

So just an update, I rang marks adaptors today, he said its not something that they have done on a prado, however the engine and chassis being the same as 4 runner and surf it should work. Now i need to find out which manual gearbox i have and how long the input shaft is.

                        Hi b00st,
I don't know what the length of your input shaft is but I believe you have a W56 transmission.

The R151F is a heavier duty box that was used in Prados and Hiluxs with V6 Petrol or Turbo Diesel engines. The 4 cylinder Petrol got the W56.

                              Thanks for the link its helped me make a decision on what im going to do for the build, I am going for a rebuilt R151 for a few reasons my gearbox has done 230000 kms now and is starting to stick, so I was planning to do a rebuild and due to the company actually making a specific bell housing for the R151 gearbox which mounts to the transfer box, the only thing i need to check is how it mounts compared to the w56. I have also done a rough price list for the build;

                              Holden Commodore VS 3800 V6 whole car $800 - $1200

( Have found one on gumtree for $800 with a buggered trans, but the engine is fine and i will strip the rest off the car and sell parts)

                              Rebuild Toyota R151F gearbox $1250

                              http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/TOYOTA-R1...item3a7d80f9ab

                              COMMODORE V6 - TOYOTA R150 & R151 Conversion Bell housing adaptor $1020
                              http://www.marks4wd.com/bell-housing.../mfk129-b.html

HOLDEN COMMODORE V6 ENGINE MOUNT RUBBER $45

http://www.marks4wd.com/engine-mount...nt-rubber.html (According to their website, when installing into a 4 cylinder engine only 1 mount is required WILL CONFIRM)

INTERFACE WIRING HARNESS - VS V6 ENGINES $435

http://www.marks4wd.com/wiring-harne.../mfk648st.html (Not sure if required due to having complete engine including the factory harness)

So far the build all up is going to cost $3950 !

However considerations need to be made for intake and exhaust systems, radiator system and im sure there is more challenges and things to think off now for its time for more research, planning, saving and acquiring

Will keep you all updated on this build!

                              Cheers Matt
