  • State50's family truckster buildup

Hi Folks, first time member here, quick introduction of myself, Im a mechanic, run my own workshop, 32 this year with a wife and 2 kids (4 & 1 1/2) and just picked up our very own 2003 Champagne Mica Prado 120 GXL V6 a few weeks ago. Always loved 120 Prado's and always said I would get one and once the family grew to 2 kids it was time.

Plans for it include a 3 month Australian holiday and some beach fishing, 4wding and used as a run about for the wife, so it is going to be a comprimised buildup to keep it comfortable but usable and capable of some more serious stuff.

So, Prado came has 160k when we got it, impecable service history, owned by Ex Collingwood/Brisbane player Craig Starcevich and then I got it off a guy in Bunbury who took really good care of it. Beige interior aswell which I must say has grown on me.

    It came with:

    Side steps
    Roof racks
    Tow bar
    Tint
    Half decent HT tyres

First mods are basic stuff at this stage such as recovery gear & little bits n pieces, so far I have picked up:

    Mean Mother basic recovery kit
    Mean Mother foldable shovel
Haigh Dr Air Pro flow 150lpm compressor
    TRED recovery tracks, bag etc
Purchased but not received or installed yet a Autosafe cargo barrier (ask for James at Auto safe, great help, great deal, very professional)

We are on the lookout for a roof cage & genuine Toyota bullbar, floor mats, rear cargo mat, dash mat, canvas bag for items on the roof cage, seat covers.

All these items are going towards our 3 month trip around the bottom of Oz taking in SA, Country NSW, NSW coast, maybe Canberra, Gold Coast for a few weeks as a base to more travelling to Townsville, Cairns etc. Becasue of the kids being so young we are going to be staying in motels/hotels etc so no camping so all the extra survival gear is not required as of yet.

Next big mods once full weight of everything we are taking is known is a probable Bilstein/Lovells or Kings Springs upgrade & poly air bags. Maybe even stretch the budget to include 4 new AT tyres, we dont intend on doing any serious 4wding on our trip, just some beach stuff, but once we get back and these current tyres will be close to replacement stage by that time I will probabaly upgrade then unless I find something good on Gumtree.

Ill get some photos up tonight from my home computer which has all the photos of the car.

Im really stoked to be taking this adventure with my family, so happy with my Prado, and look forward to jumping on PP and updating things, giving advice, tips etc where I can help using my mechanical background and doing this rig buildup and even a trip report.

    Thanks for reading.

    John

Yep sorry butane, forgot to add that. Its an automatic. I was originally aiming for the 05 onwards 5spd auto but couldnt find one in our budget. But its still a great car to drive. Ive worked on heaps of them through the years and they are just so reliable and nice.

Derek11, Im already salivating at some of the other build ups.

Installed our Autosafe cargo barrier yesterday. If your interested in a cargo barrier, I had a good look around and found them to be competitive on price & as I got it trade it was even cheaper. James at Autosafe was very easy & professional to deal with and gave me a great deal. Fits really easy, took about 30 minutes. I fitted a set of those lobe knobs that OldGreyGuy recommended in his rig buildup. If you ever need a set of those lobe knobs (also called star knobs, clamping knobs, tri knobs) try Flexline in Dianella or Oveso online. Ovesco were nice but I needed them quickly and Dianella isnt far. Ill put some photos up sometime this weekend of the finished product installed.

Only problem is now without the rear most seats there is room for a fridge for our trip. See how we go. Still have to find a good roof cage/basket & bullbar before we go a fridge.

Also picked up my Haigh Dr Air Proflow 150 compressor. I picked it because it won a 4WD Action review a while back and straight out of the box it looks the goods, except the tear in the bag and damaged spare air filter housing (Freight companies are useless). But the supplier is going to sort it. Now while I have final measurements for it, Im considering mounting it with quick release pins in the engine bay or just leaving it in the bag in the boot or somewhere.

Damn you Prado Point, hahahaha, just ordered a set of Pacemaker extractors for the car. Was going to go ceramic coated but the 2 week wait & $230.00 extra swayed my decision to just go standard ones. After reading all the positive experiences of the extractor change & wanting to get rid of that slight ticking noise I caved over the weekend.

Now now, don't blame Pradopoint, we have done wrong. We merely show you the forbidden fruit, its up to you whether you eat it. But if you do bite into it, just be warned, next thing you know you'll have 1600+ posts...

On a lighter note, at least being a mechanic you will be able to save on install costs!

Just had the pacemaker extractors fitted today. Normally I would fit stuff like that, but as soon as welding is involved I don't get involved. Terrible welding skills here.

Very happy with the slight power increase, requires less pedal effort on the same roads/hills etc. Idle felt smoother, felt like less revs at a given speed aswell, but not sure as I hadn't really paid attention to that before. Looking forward to comparing the fuel usage. I think it will take a couple of tanks for the change in exhaust to be seen due to he computer altering slowly. I think I'm responsible enough to not boot it too much at this stage.
Installer had quoted originally $690.00 installed (trade/mates rate) the job took a bit longer than expected but still should get charged the same (they are our usual tyre/exhaust shop we use at my shop) Tyrepower in Bibra Lake, ask for Wayne, he is really a good bloke to chat to, lots of advice and a fellow 4x4 fan and does a top notch job.

Got my Firestone/coil rite air bags to go on next, after loading the car up with almost 300kg of magazines & 160 litres the other day whilst cleaning out my shop I checked and found it was on the bump stops, so airbags will be necessary, but at this stage I'm confident I won't need to go springs/shocks etc. I'll save for the Bilsteins/Lovells for when we get back.
I'll get some photos up tomorrow for sure. Promise.

Hi state50 - you might have a few clients in WA chasing that price - per this thread

                      http://www.pradopoint.com/showthread...tractors/page2

We could only get quotes over $900 installed - was that $690 parts etc installed?? Look forward to savings experienced

Yes Kim, that was installed, but that was through my usual tyre supplier who also does exhausts. I will get the final bill today so ill confirm it. But I only get that price because we send a lot of work to them. I wouldn't think many people would get that. But I will find out what a retail quote would be.
