  • A Random approach to a Bluestorm 150 GXL D4D automatic

So here is the shopping list and a few comments along the way. Formating didn't work out so well so an X means completed and a ? means getting there.

X T3 colour coded bullbar - fitted pre delivery
Bumper cut rather than infill pieces which seem to have been problematic and recovery points
    http://www.pradopoint.com/showthread...-thread/page17
    http://www.pradopoint.com/showthread...-Series/page25

X TJM XGS Gold Lift with Polyair bags - fitted pre delivery
    Front struts 659GE188L
    Front springs 770FR88I
    Rear shock absorbers 650GE288L
    Rear springs 770RR88I

X Toyota towbar with flat plug - fitted pre delivery

X Safari snorkel - fitted pre delivery
    Wife’s preference Safari over Airtec

X 265/70 17BFG AT KO2. With a trip in the works that needs a bit more tyre and the revision to the KO2 and the regs up here I went 70 profile. Early days but happy.

X TG150 guard, fitted as per Brains posts and fine instructions:
    http://www.pradopoint.com/showthread...e-Guard-(TG120)

X TJM steel sidesteps - fitted pre delivery
Steps are good, higher and stronger but the wife has a problem with how wide they are. The steps catch on her clothes. Will have to take the sharpish edges off as well. Might need to do some work.

X Britax spot lights - Lights mounted, wiring completed, Britax make a theft proof nut which I have fitted. Update, I fitted the Britax 60W HID conversion and the lights are really very good. No need for any changes now

X Camera shroud removal as suggested here by brogers
    http://www.pradopoint.com/showthread...150-GXL/page35

X Dual battery system - Redarc BCDC1225 mounted in vehicle with Ritar 120 AH AGM battery. As part of the electrical feed I am looking at a multiple ANL fuse block to feed the compressor, spot lights and the 6B&S to the DC DC charger. The DC DC charger will be set up with a changeover relay to allow solar supply when camping. Wiring as per the Redarc suggestion. Fridge mounting board made, box made and fitted out. For anyone contemplating the same set up with a solar in feed the Britax changeover relay I used was the Britax Relay PN: RC1260R and accompanying base 99025B. This relay and base have the larger pins that make wiring with the 10mm cable possible.

X Brake controller - Redarc towpro

X Air compressor - ARB CKMTA12 mounted under the bonnet in the unused battery space

X Breather extensions - as per PP with mini gearbox breather heads from OzHyd

? Differential locks - TJM prolocker to be fitted by June next year

? Shadow chrome work – maybe, looks better with the bluestorm paintwork

    X Batteries meter - Baintech

X Catch can - Genuine Provent from Mann+Hummel. Install pretty much the same as http://www.pradopoint.com/showthread...tching-Blow-by

X Roof rack - JARTLRAL18RM gutterless Jaram Tracklander 1800 x 1200 with Rhino CXB mounts. New rails fitted, works a treat. Details here http://www.pradopoint.com/showthread...s-using/page17

    X DRLs - Narva 71940
Fitted the DRLs into the T3 in place of the foglights

    X TJM underbody protection
Fitted on the weekend. Very easy bolt on, makes the original tinfoil and plastic look like tinfoil and plastic!

? Runva 11XP winch with nylon rope. Sitting in the garage, just need to fit it. Using a Roadsafe extended hawse.

? Transmission cooler by Tin. All the parts are in the shed, just need to fit it.

A couple of shots; when it was first delivered out to TJM Brendale for the pre delivery work, didn't even have rego.

And how it looks with the Tracklander on top

And how she looks at the moment.

The front is bang on 800mm with 32mm of spacer in the strut while the rear is 840 with 5psi in the polyairs, that is without rear seats or fridge/battery though. I jacked up the front and the droop is 80mm which is pretty fair.

Initial impressions of the suspension (only 300km on the clock) is that it is softer and more compliant than the OME set up on the 120. That brings more body roll but a gentler ride. Happy so far. It will be interesting to see how the suspension settles.

And this is where I got to with the auxiliary battery / fridge mount.

The board is cut to size and shape and ready for the infill pieces at the rear and then carpet just like the box. I concentrated on getting the battery box and DC DC charger set up.

EDIT: I am intending to bolt the ply down with spacers into the rear seat captive nut. the bolts are M10 x 1.25 so should be no problem. Learned don't trust your apprentice son to use the thread gauge and verniers!

The box is screwed into position and can be removed. The battery and charger are installed when the picture was taken. The Redarc BCDC1225 working as per specifications. The lower front of the box is open both to let airflow in and also that is where the solar and main battery cable feeds will come in. The Anderson plugs are back inside the box to protect them from accidental knocks. The carpet is about 10mm longer than it needs to be and will tuck under the board to tidy up the install. The main battery feed runs inside a slot between to rails under the board so it cannot slip out and get damaged.

The other side of the battery box. I am not sure how much heat will be generated but I think the vents are more than adequate. The Redarc unit is upside down on the lid bolted with spacers directly under the top vent.

            As can be seen here

Wiring actually looks neater than that. The battery is connected to a Baintech 6 outlet blade fuse block with +ve and -ve terminals which nestles under the relay. It all fits quite nicely.

Inside the battery box I have used 8 B&S for everything except the outlet to the fridge which is 6mm2 (not 6mm automotive wiring). Both the solar and battery infeed will be via 50A Anderson plugs. The changeover relay is normally closed to the solar input (red Anderson plug) while the battery supply (grey Anderson plug) will be switched when power is sensed from an engine on 12V supply. I am thinking of patching into the spare connector near the rear A/C unit. Fused of course. A 40A ANL in line fuse connects the DC DC charger outlet to the auxiliary battery positive terminal. I have set up a common earth. The cable that connects the main battery will be dual 6 B&S.

As the main battery will have the twin cables from the ARB CKMTA12 and the power supply to the spot lights I am thinking of installing another fuse block next to the battery. The 6 B&S cable to the rear will be run through a manual circuit breaker so I can trip the power and isolate the cable.

And this is what the fridge will see

The outlet is an Anderson powerpole 6 gang outlet. One is for the fridge and is fused at 10A, the second is for supply to the Baintech voltage/voltage meter and is fused at 1A while the third will be the input for the engine on sensor wire.

The green and black wires unconnected are the LED that shows the Redarc unit is operating (LED is at the front top left corner, I haven't trimmed the carpet as yet though the recessed hole has been drilled) while the blue wire is the engine on feed to switch over the relay to battery supply.

And finally for today this is where and how I intend to mount the ARB compressor. I had some 4mm plate plasma cut so the next job will be welding that into a bracket that can work.

Appreciate the comments guys, just hope something in here helps someone else out like all of you did for me when I was in the process of buying.

See ya in a couple of weeks, mind you I will check in now and again, probably through an alcoholic haze if my meetings run as well as I expect them to...

Are you intending on using any waffle pad or the like under the compressor to minimize vibration/resonance?

I have found some vibration blocks that I think will do the job. The bracket has to be in two pieces because there isn't enough room to get your hands in there. So the lower section will be bolted to the battery support using existing threaded holes. The four blocks will already be bolted down and then the compressor with bracket will fit on top of that and be bolted to the blocks.

There is a supplier out at Brendale and also Blackwoods carry a range of these. Haven't checked the detailed specifications but load rating is fine. Finally used M8 blocks that are 25mm high. That plus the 4mm plate top and bottom will give me clearance around the A/C valve.

Had a pretty productive weekend on the aux battery after being away for a couple of weeks. I got our workshop to make me up a new battery / charger box out of 1.6 gal because I was concerned how tight space was inside the wooden box I made. Well the guys did a fabulous job exactly as per my drawing and I spent Saturday finishing it off. Cut the vents and fitted rivnuts to mount the fuse box, the charger, the vents and the latch. Today I made up the infill pieces at the rear and they turned out pretty well. Just have to work out how to trim the carpet around the plastic bits left after taking out the seats and trims. Had an idea when I was putting all in and if it works i will post that up too. If it doesn't, well... it never happened. Sorted out where to run the 6 B&S and I will pick up the countersunk screws tomorrow. Then I can finish the board off and bolt it in place. Fit out the box with battery and bits and all I have to do is wire in the feed from the main battery. Going to pick up a Projecta fused battery terminal (someone posted while I was away and I cannot for the life of me remember who, but thanks for the heads up). Screws and terminal are out Virginia way so I will skive off early tomorrow.

Excuse the pics I used my 18mm lens and didn't bother correcting for the distortion. Could have been worse, I had the fisheye on before that.

Looking from the back towards the box, fridge will be directly behind the box. I had to remove some carpet from the hinge to allow the lid to open fully so I will paint the hinge black.

Trim on the driver's side. The trims fit neatly into place and I am thinking of using double sided tape to hold them rather than a more permanent solution.

                        T'other side

                        [

And the front. The box only just clears the back of the seat in a comfortable laid back position. Seat is as far back as it can go. You might be able to see the green LED that will tell me whether the Redarc is working all goodly.

I have a couple of bits of carpet to add to tidy up as this box is a little different in size to the other one. The difference though between the sheet steel and wood is I now have an extra 15mm side to side and front to back.

I have put a double layer of ply at the front and rear and routed it with a half round bit to let the carpet roll over easily. I will make the carpet a bit longer than the board and let it fold under to keep it neat. Routed the sides of the board for the same reason.

I will trim up the carpet on the board this weekend.

Bit more progress with the auxiliary / charger / fridge board.

All installed. Just have to run the main cable through the firewall and connect up. And paint a couple things nice flat black like the box hinge and the mounting board for the Anderson plugs.

The red wire is the trigger to tell the DC charger the engine is running, well accessories anyway. I used the green wire as found by footoo here http://www.pradopoint.com/showthread...ocations/page2. I have fused the wire and can access the fuse through the AC panel.

Looking from the other side. The Anderson plug with the supply from the main battery is just visible. I ran the 6B&S under the board from the near side. I also ran some wire for the brake controller and two more wires for the battery monitor I plan on fitting up the pointy end. Hopefully no need to pull the board out again. Famous last words...

I still have to tidy up the in fill pieces. Just have to trim the carpet to follow the contour of the factory trim.

I used the factory tie downs to bolt the board in. That way I don't have to worry about concealling the the bolt heads and I get the use of the tie downs. There is one bolt exposed behind the battery / charger box but that will be covered by the fridge, it is the black dot to the right of the tie downs. A third bolt is under the battery tray in the box. The four screws that hold the fridge in are fitted to M6 "Screw-in Insert Nuts". The ones that are used in cabinet making. These cannot be seen in the shots.

Quite happy with the result. Tedious but worth it in the end. I siliconed the cables under the board to stop them flopping around like untrained seals. The only bolts I could find for the rear that were long enough were socket head screws 65mm long. Up front I fitted M8 rivnuts and used countersunk screws. The socket head screws are only just low enough to let the tie down close, probably should have ground a couple of mm off the heads but close enough.

I siliconed around all the old holes that weren't being used and also used some sealant around the bolts that are holding down the board.

Cabling will be done later today after I have some lunch. Maybe get a start on the compressor bracket tomorrow. The rubber isolator blocks arrived at the office after I left so that can wait until next week, I know what size they are so I can trim the mounts to suit.

                              Fantastic Job MJ.

I just purchased and installed the ORS False floor for my Prado 150, I can see clearly that you have put allot more work into your setup.
Your base is lower than the ORS unit and you have the small wings, which I do not have. I might look at putting some off them on my ORS setup.

                              Good work, thanks for sharing.
