  • Issues with Weight of Steel Bar

    Hi Guys

Very new to the forum but used to have a 120 Series and will be taking delivery of a new 150 Series GXL next week.

Just deciding on accessories and when it comes to the Steel bars iv read here and there that there can be sag in the front end from these heavy bars.. Can anyone confirm?

I dont mind the alloy bars but the genuine one is FUGLY!! and my old man has had issues with his alloy TJM bar pitting and going an off colour very quickly.

Thinking towards a TJM T13 in White but havnt thought about doing any suspension or lift mods.

Appreciate any advice you guys may have

    Cheers
    Biddsy

    sbidder,
If you put a steel bar on you will need a heavier suspension to support it.

I'm no suspension expert but I am in the process of replacing the front springs on my Kakadu. It does have a bit of a nose dive effect with the steel bar and stock suspension and now with the added weight of the winch I felt it was time to do something. I am replacing just the springs for now as I didn't want to lose the in-cabin adjustments with the Toyota TEMS shocks. I'll be using Dobinsons C59-726 which are a KDSS specific spring with 40mm lift, their parts list suggests the C59-302 for petrol and C59-352 for diesel non-KDSS 150s with 50-100kg of accessories up front.

I haven't looked at doing anything with the rears as I have airbag suspension there but may do the washer trick to fool the airbag height sensors.

I have a TJM T13 bar in basic black, very happy with the look. I'm not so happy with the TJM plastic infills under the grille and around the headlights, if you do go for the TJM then go with the bumper cut option instead.

Yes, any weight will add to a drop in suspension. Try to do the suspension last once you've got all the accessories on. But springs are cheap and it's not too hard to change them out. Even better if you buy front struts that have adjustable spring seat so you can raise the front up as you add more accessories without changing springs.

... ot the TJM XGS front struts which have spacers to bring the ride height up to where it needs to be.

Thanks so much guys for all the advice..

Definitely some food for thought, I love the look of the TJM T13 in black or white but i dont want the new toy to be taking a nose dive from day 1.

I fitted an ARB Sahara bar and dual batteries in mine and ran it for nearly 2 years with the standard suspension with no noticeable sag in the front end. When I fitted the OME 50mm lifted springs I did a before and after measurement thinking it would come up a lot more than 50mm (sagged amount plus 50 above standard) but it came up bang on 55 all round.

With a steel bar, winch and dual batteries, my front shocks shagged out in 30,000 km. Fitted tough dog all round and haven't looked back, the difference is chalk and cheese. Next time I wouldn't wait 30,000 km, I'd do the replacement shocks from day one,I didn't realise how hard it became to drive until after I upgraded the suspension.
