Way back when I was dealing with this I noticed a few of the very first upgrade models had the old style guards. Must have been sitting in the yard for a long time!

        Model: VX
Crack Location: Both Sides Passenger Side/Drivers Side
Crack appeared @: Just had a look. Who knows when they occurred. Now at 190,000km.
Toyota Response: Not yet approached Toyota
        Outcome: NA
Battery & Weight: Original Style Battery and Tray Passenger Side. 'Supercheap' Tray (self installed) and Century Marine Pro battery Drivers side.
Battery Tray: Forget brand, bought at Supercheap, self installed.
Tray Modifications: Not much, just enough to accommodate air con brackets.
Vehicle Modifications: ECB ally bulbar, after purchase: Bilstein shocks, Dobinson springs, 50mm lift, air bags rear. 18" BFG all round.
4WD Trips: Purchased car July 2013 with 100,000km. Installed second battery and headed out. Gibb R Rd, Mitchell Falls etc, Cape Leveque,
Tallawana Track, Gary Hwy, Gunbarrell, Heather etc back to Uluru. Had to take a serious nosedive off a 10ft edge onto Cape Leveque Rd after going bush around a bogged road train, partly removed the bash plate. Nasty shock to car but all else seemed good.

This car came off a farm in central NSW. The guard(s) may have been cracked when I purchased. Here am I over two years and 90,000km later discovering this thanks to this thread.
What are the consequences for not getting them repaired ?
Should I take it to Toyota for some action or just a waste of time ?
        Thanks

Given the 'mods' to the vehicle you won't get anything from Toyota, they consider any addition as a mod.

The cracks generally come from high frequency vibration ie corrugations. I found this out when working on the problem with Toyota. I'm pretty sure my cracks came from one corrugated road that I do a few times/year. By the way, tyre pressure definitely is a factor on corrugations.

How bad are the cracks, I always wondered what would happen if you do nothing? If you do fix the only proper fix is using the patch kits, mine has patch kit with weld and still fine after 3 years.

          • Thanks Krypto
Well I definitely gave them a couple of good months of corrugations in 2014. Tyres down to 20 psi most of the bad roads. Ripped huge chunks of rubber out of my BFG's but never lost one.
The cracks are as bad as any in photos on this thread. My guess is the cracks have been that bad for two years.
I will check out the patch kits. I want another 100,000km out of this car which runs like a dream.

I have a patch kit for the RHS side that I no longer need as I upgraded to a newer model, and would like to sell it.

              PM me if interested.

My Prado has aftermarket suspension, 2nd battery, bullbar and winch. Toyota installed the patch kit at no cost to me without a single question/comment about the aftermarket bits. The dealer took photos of the car from front, side and rear to show that it had not been abused and that was it.

When did you have the patch kit fitted? If recently, maybe they have changed their approach.

You are probably the only person on this forum that has been treated fairly by Toyota. They provided the kit but I had to pay labour. I was clearly told that it was the aftermarket suspension that had caused the problem. This was probably two years ago.

It would be just over 3 years ago. Vehicle was still (just) in warranty.

                      • Well, I remember reading the cracked inner guard thread 5 years ago..and was an early contributor, having found a guy with cracked guards but no mods. ARB wanted to get in touch with him.
                        It's happened.

                          • Hi team
I have just bought a Mar 2015 build off a friend
I admit to not having done a proper search
Are there any photos of this fault or a very accurate description so I can check it out please
My car has a second battery and an alloy bar and winch fitted
