My GX D4D is now over 3 years and 94,000km,s old and no sign of cracking on either side.
Its been fitted with an ARB winch bar and aux battery on Piranha tray since not long after I bought it, and about 18 months ago, a 12,000lb winch.

I've been to the last 3 of the 4 Get together's in it,and at the last one in SA it copped a right old bashing on Billy Goat Ridge, and as well other places where we've gone camping, and it's still holding together. Hopefully that's a sign it's not going to cause me trouble.

You can add two stock standard 150 Prados, a GX and a GXL, to the list of cracks on the passenger side (left) guard.

Have a mate visiting at the moment and he was telling me how p*&sed off he was having just discovered that his Prado 150 GX has a crack on the passenger side guard . Took me outside to show me on another Prado where his was cracked and found a crack on the passenger side guard in exactly the same spot and exactly the same size. Both the cracks look like they've been there for a while as there are signs of rust.

For all those people speculating about modifications playing a part, both the Prados are bog standard apart from being dual battery. The crack IS NOT on the dual battery (driver's) side. Both done some dirt driving, in my case it is really pretty minimal some corrugated roads and a bit of off-roading every now and then.

I've included a picture below, details of the vehicles are:
11/2010 (reg 02/2011) Prado 150 GXL, 58,000 km - 3cm crack on passenger side (left) guard
3/2011 (reg 04/2011) Prado 150 GX, 80,000km - 3cm crack on passenger side (left) guard

His dealer has admitted liability and says the repair requires removal and replacement of the whole guard, which includes some welding.

The picture below is taken looking down inside the engine bay next to the fuse box on the passenger side. The black plastic in the top of the picture is the fuse box. The crack can also be seen from under the guard but is not quite as clear.

Are there many reports of the later150 (last year or two) guards cracking?? I read somewhere that they have changed the guard design a year or so ago??

Design changed with the latest update, a few of which initially still had the old design.

The good thing is that there is a simple fix. Bad news is that Toyota won't fully cover it under warranty if you have lots of mods, especially bullbar or suspension. Still you should be able to get them to supply the patch kit.

Is this "patch kit" known by all dealerships? My thoughts is that there would only be a couple.....

My RHS repairs are all still go well with no signs of cracks recurring - No signs either in the LHS and I've just had to replace our Main battery too - went with a Optima type battery which is a bit lighter than the previous one.....

The patch kit is a standard Toyota part although I don't have the part number. I know of two cars that have it fitted, mine is one. It is a really neat fit and gives you a super strong guard. I think I posted photos somewhere, just can't remember where right now.

Everytime you mention the patch kit, I asked my local dealer's parts interpreter of whether there is one and everytime, the answer is no. I wonder what Toyota is doing/hiding (???)

Here is the link to the photo of the patch kit.

I spoke to toyota australia customer service today, they told me that the patch is a "mechanic only" and that i would have a hard time buying one. The lady was unwilling to help me get one. Every dealer i have approached are only intrested in replacing the inner guard for an exorbenant fee...

Both guards cracked for me. Went to the dealer this morning who took pictures to send to Toyota and is awaiting their reply. They did make mention that the aftermarket suspension may be a contributing factor. The dealer said they haven't seen any cracks before but they are in Central Melbourne so it could be true for them. Now I have to wait for the reply from Toyota.

Yes, be prepared for Toyota to blame the suspension. When you say there are photo examples on this sight of stock vehicles with cracked guards, they won,t listen. They used the suspension as an excuse and I had to pay the labour. If you take it to Frankston Toyota they have repaired at least 2 Prado's so at least know what they are doing and have a welder on site as opposed to sending the Prado to a panel beater who will charge the earth for a simple weld.
But it is not a fault with Toyota, they just make a repair kit out of the goodness of their hearts!!Yeah, right

Yes I agree the proof is there that it is a design issue from the fact that they have changed the setup on the updated model and that they have the patch kit. To go to the trouble of the patch kit is a huge indicator that this has happened enough times for them to go to the trouble of designing a fix and actually producing a stamped part.

I was just speaking to the service guy who looked at it, and it was pretty obvious at that point that all they were going to do was report it to Toyota. He appear to be pretty cautious about what he said and I figured that I should save further discussions until they get the answer back from Toyota. But he did think that it was caused by the vibrations on corrugations/rough roads fatiguing the metal. He also thought that the cracks wouldn't get any worse though I dont feel that inclined to take his word on that. I would also suggest that anyone running a full size optima battery think carefully about putting a lighter battery in their car.

Thanks for the information about the Frankston option, and its to good to know that you at least got the parts for free. How long did they have the car for the fix as it is quite a way from home? Can you share what it cost for the fix?

It certainly makes it difficult to recommend a toyota to anyone let alone purchasing another!!
