Could have a bit to do with the problem, the injectors may not have been getting enough fuel through them to help lubricate and cool, and this may have caused them to be noisy. All maybes and very hard to confirm without seeing the vehicle. I would replace the fuel filter with a genuine one and reset the light, then see if the noise is still present. I'm sure you now know the fuel filter should be changed every x kms, I will be doing mine every 40,000kms but will have a primary filter fitted by the end of this week too. You can't really blame toyota for this, the consumer (you and I) are pushing for cheaper services, and engines that go better, the result is an engine that requires clean fuel and a filter that we are trying to extend the life of to lower service costs. Toyota isn't the only manufacturer guilty of this, BMW dont change the filter until 120,000km on some of their diesels I'm told.

Thanks to all of the good info above. We were out in the snow yesterday and my fuel light came on. We went to drain it and there was nothing apart from Diesel in the filter. Anyway being up in the mountains and no service desks to be found we started on our 200km trek back home. I changed the filter today and used the light turn off method above and all appears well as the car feels a little more responsive. My prado just passed 40000km

I had the same last week coming home from the Simpson. Exactly as someone posted before, when the light comes on, and after draining there was no water to be seen, the fitter needs to be changed, hence why you should carry a spare. They told me though to reset the light, disconnect the top sensor wire, turn the car on to pre start then connect the sensor then turn the car of then start it within 30 secs. It worked thankfully.....

hi all, I got my car in to Toyota and they said it was the filter.. they changed it and charged me $230 and said it wasn't under warranty !!! to make things worse they said I had to pay $100 for the tow from my place to the service centre !!!! I lost it at them and couldn't believe they would charge so much for a 10 minute job !! so I said to them I would not be back and would be happy driving to Werribee or colac to get a service done by people that actually want your work and are happy to discuss things about your car !! rant over haha

also to add..... im planning a big trip and take off in about 6 weeks so as piece of mind I got an extended warranty for 3 years for $1295 !!! I just don't want to be stuck somewhere and not being able to pay !!! I thought it was quiet cheap..

That is cheap for the Toyota Extracare warranty, sure it isn't a dealer warranty?

I advise you to read the fine print. Those warranties can have some limits on what is covered how much they will pay for any event and total spend per year. Just know what you are up for.

                  Have a great trip.

There is definitely a difference between the Toyota version and Swan from what I have read. I would read carefully....

The filter is $107.00 so they've charged you $123.00 for a 20 minute job!!

The reset procedure works on 150 Series too. Anyone want to know what happens if you change the filter and don't turn out the light. At about 1000km the car goes into reduced power (limp home) mode. No extra warning light, just no go. Fortunately this happened to me after I'd already come up & down the Adelaide Hills with my 2.5t boat and I wasn't stranded on a hill. I limped the car back to my workshop - 10PM so not much traffic about - and researched the procedure on PP. 5 minutes later - back to normal again. You might be wondering why I'd left it so long - I'd changed the filter in a Macca's car park in Melb that morning, so I was confident the filter itself was OK.

                          Toyota, oh what a pain.

Why don't you put in the handbook how to reset that damn light. I had this problem yesterday when out. Drained filter five times and light still on. Drove home last night, replaced filter today and light still on. Thanks to Pradopoint, I found out that the light needed to be reset. Pradopoint is of much more use to me than Toyota.

My light came on this morning on the way home from our Ningaloo Station and Exmouth trip. Was about 1:45am and had about 100km to go. Had to keep driving and after reading everything above am worried I may have not done the injectors any good. Should I still be OK and will a further 15km drive to Toyota tomorrow not be a good idea?

15 more km won't make a difference. You're likely going to find filters are clogged up

Do you just unscrew the filter and simply screw the new one on? Does it need to be filled up with diesel first?
