  • Would you buy a Prado that lives in a coastal area - Salt Spray rust

Have come across a 2008 Prado GXL Petrol good service history but Owner lives on the Gold Coast near broadbeach. On inspection there appeared to be a lot of surface rust under the chassis and on nuts/bolts, the owner swears that he has not done any beachwork and that the corrosion is only surface rust from the salty coastal spray in the air.

Having never lived anywhere remotely coastal does anyone have experience from rust caused by living in a coastal area? And would you even consider buying this car? The owner is prepared to discount because of this but I am unsure if I should be concerned with this rust that appears superficial but I have no way of knowing this.

I personally wouldn't touch a car that's been near the salt air. My pops car is between a lake and the ocean and even though its garaged and washed every week and looks fine from the outside when you start to look at things like your self under the bonnet it makes me wonder how far into the door seams, front apron and places you cant see does the salt air travel and cause damage you cant access. My old man use to tell me when we lived on the coast to wack in a few capfuls of kero into the wash water as its oil based it would get into the lower part of the doors, lower guards etc and around my sunroof etc and stop the rust. Did it work ?? not sure I sold the car before it would of had time to rust out.... Not for me thanks......Cheers Steve

Hey Steve, thanks for the heads up - good to hear from someone with actual experience of salt spray.

Looks like I continue my lookout - feels weird to be lurking on pradopoint without actually owning a Prado haha

""feels weird to be lurking on pradopoint without actually owning a Prado haha "" better to find out all the info you need/can before diving into some thing you may regret, although I must say I don't think you will ever regret buying a prado, there a top 4wd lol, I may be a bit biased.....Cheers Steve
