  • Spilsy's 2013 White GXL Build Up

In March 2013, I bit the bullet and bought my first Prado - My first 4x4 actually. From the moment I took one out for a test drive i knew it was what I'd been chasing.
After a few hassles finalising the loan (8 hours waiting at the Dealer) Everything was sorted and I finally had the chance to take it home.

The afternoon I picked it up.

I had ordered a Colour Coded ARB deluxe bar to put on the front however that was still a few weeks away.

In the first month, I managed to rack up ~4000kms. Yeah, that's a few.
The bar arrived in time for the first month service so I had it installed by the guys at Shepparton Toyota (they'd arranged the whole thing conveniently)

At the 10,000 km mark I had some Lightforce Striker 170's installed.

As it stands, the exterior looks like this (excuse the dirt and mud and etc.)

I recently took my first real off roading trip with some work colleagues up to Mount Terrible. Needless to say this was an eye opener. And I did get stuck (The, um, Grandtreks are a bit useless sometimes). And I did get towed out by a Jeep. Nevertheless, it was a great first trip out.

    Congrats on the purchase.

You will enjoy the time putting on all the new equipment and then getting out there and driving it.

I had 500km up the day after I bought it, and as i said 4k kms in the first month. Unfortunately, most of the kms have been on the freeway to Melbourne and Back. It's an amazing long distance vehicle though.

            Drawer Build

When I set about building my drawer, I found quite a few Threads that were helpful, so I figured I'd do my bit.

To start with, these were my requirements:
            • Low Material Cost
            • Simple to Build
            • Only on 1 side of the Vehicle (allow for easy luggage storage on the other side, or a fridge...)
            • The 3rd Row Seats were to Stay

I set about designing the drawers from dimensions I had read throughout this forum, and from the specs of various manufacturers of 150 Series drawers.

For the single drawer I come up with the following.

I made sure everything could fit on a single sheet of 2400 x 1200 mm 12mm ply.
I had the helpful staff at Bunnings cut out each section for me (their saws cut straighter lines than mine).
I purchased some 40 kg 600mm soft closed drawer slides - also from Bunnings. (http://www.bunnings.com.au/drawer-sl...s6021_p4020355)

To assemble, I took inspiration from IKEA and numbered all the parts and layed them out on the ground.
I pre-drilled, glued and screwed all the parts together following the plan I had roughed out.

This is how it looked just after the drawer slides went in.

And after it was tidied up and sanded. (The Bosch Cordless Orbital sander was a godsend!)

To finish the timber work, I installed a latch I purchased from Ovesco (Card No. 1084.22 Part No. FLLL.ZP)
            http://www.ovesco.com.au/products.ph...=Lever%20Locks

To Finish it all, I carpeted it, Bunnings again for the carpet and Spray Adhesive to attach it with. I also purchased some aluminium angle to give the top leading edge some protection (and make it look smashing!)

            This is the finished Product:

To Bolt it in, I removed the luggage tie down points, and used M6 bolts through the base of the drawer. I'm sure if you need some photos of this, I can arrange it.

If required, in the future, I can put a second drawer in on top or beside the current one.

              Christmas Haul

Christmas having been and gone, I thought I'd provide an update on what goodies I received.

              1. Recovery Gear - Ridge Ryder Recovery set. This includes 2 rated shackles (varying sizes), Snatch Strap and Gloves.
              2. Compressor - Tigerz11 Thumper - http://www.tigerz11.com.au/product-c...pressor-1.html

After Christmas, I was given a Drag Chain - it has a little surface rust, but a quick clean up will fix that.

              Finally - I have purchased a Uniden 7700NB with a 5dB Antenna. (http://www.gadgetcity.com.au/uniden-...Path=92_36_113)
I'm trying to work out exactly where I'd like to install the radio (toss up between centre console box or Glove Box). Advice is sought here.

If I end up doing the install myself, I will endeavour to upload many photos and some advice on how to go about it.

              Cheers!

                Uniden UH 7700NB UHF Install

I gave my local Toyota dealer a buzz and enquired about the fitment cost for my new UHF radio. To my surprise, I was told if I installed the antenna and mounted the radio, Toyota would do the wiring for $99.00. I've jumped at this prospect, so tonight I set about with the mechanical install.

I first acquired some 7mm split conduit to run the co-ax. cable from the antenna to the firewall. ($7 from repco for 3 metres)

I mounted the antenna to the bullbar. I had to screw the antenna through the hole provided on the ARB bullbar (the hole was the thickness of the powder coating too small).

I then covered the co-ax. with the conduit. You can see the antenna mounted here: Click image for larger version

I fed the cable down through the bullbar and up into the engine bay. See that here: Click image for larger version

I then ran the cable under the plastic panel that holds the bonnet seal - there's a couple of loops of steel that the cable can run through quite nicely. Thanks to rwo for the idea for this: http://www.pradopoint.com/showthread...-White-150-GXL

The co-ax is now coiled up at the firewall in anticipation of Toyota's wiring job.

The Radio (Uniden UH 7700NB) is being velcro'd to the panel next to the hand brake. After some thorough research into the adhesion characteristics of velcro, I decided that this would be a novel yet strong way to mount the Unit - I shall provide some photos once the wiring has been completed. (Or once the velcro has had time to adhere to the panel and the unit)

EDIT: 22/01/14 - Radio is booked in to be wired up on Tuesday. Will have an update after this.

Ill hopefully grab some photos tonight after work. I'm still not 100% sure that this will be the final resting place. I will have to wait and see.
The centre console was ruled out when I discovered the mic. cable was too thick to allow the console lid to close. (a small modification could yet be on the cards)

Uniden UH 7700NB UHF Install Continued

So...Turns out velcro is not the way to hold the radio in place...the adhesive sort of failed during the heat of today.
I also adjudicated the location i suggested in me previous post. Putting it here wouldn't allow the drivers seat to slide forward (not that all 6 foot 2 of me would need to move the seat forward).

I have instead installed it in the centre console as I had first wanted to. This posed a new problem: the mic. cable would not allow the console lid to close. I fixed this quite simply.
Using a small, file and a 6ish mm drill bit, I added a cable tunnel at the point where the lid met the console. You can see this here: Click image for larger version

Size:	89.9 KB

This little tunnel can not be seen when the lid is down and allows the mic. cable to pass thru with ease. I will lay my hands on some fine grit wet & dry later this week and clean up the scratches I made.

Looking into the console, this is the view: Click image for larger version

I am yet to know if I will need an external speaker for the radio, but that should be a relatively simple install at a later date.

Uniden UH 7700NB UHF Install Continued

So, we went into Toyota today, and $99 later the radio is up and running.
Its wired into the accessories, which probably isn't too bad given my memory. The bloke at Toyota even left the fuse in the console so its easy to replace if/when it blows.

On a final note, if the radio is turned up, it can be clearly heard with the console lid closed.

                        Cheers.

                            Ellwood,

To be honest, yes I did, but there was no way I could justify the $100/slide at the time.
At the moment, I'm tossing some new ideas up into the air as I have a) run out of room in the drawer, and b) would like to try and level the storage area floor out.

I am considering utilising 2 x under bed plastic roller boxes with some clever carpentry to make them disappear - Basically a hinged front door... but that is still very much in concept phase at the moment.

                            Cheers!!
