Can only imagine what a tuned one goes like.

I'll have to keep an eye out for the modded Ranger whenever I'm in Benalla.
I'll be sapping some of the power out with the extra load on the back...

    • So, as promised here comes a bit of a Ranger write up.

My build up thread is HERE for anyone who wants to read it - if the forum's visitor permissions permit...
The forum functionality isnt as good as PP. The content is pretty good, but the software running it isnt as good as vBulletin.

The very first thing I noticed hopping into my new Ranger was...the quality of the plastics. Unlike the plush dash and window sills of the Prado, the Ranger has hard scratchy plastics. Which is both strange and expected. Strange as the trim around the power window switches is leather (or a version thereof), as is the steering weel. Expected as it is a commercial vehicle in the end.

The next was the tech. This thing far out does the Prado in terms of wizardry. I have Sat Nav, Adaptive Cruise, Front and Rear parking sensors, lane keeping aid, pre-collision assist (which primes the brakes ahead of a collision), a decent stereo, tyre pressue warning, and an electric speed limiter. I love technology, I am, however, wary of it failing - for some reason, last night the adaptive cruise didnt want to work, and it wouldnt let me use normal cruise...

The seats are as comfy as the Prado - albeit a little narrower. The fabric is better than the Prado. The driving position is good, but the brake and throttle may be a little close together.

POWER!!!! This thing, even with a 300kg canopy on the back, gets to 100km/h in about 2/3 of the time it took the Prado. It has a pretty dreadful lag at take off, but so do most big diesels. Its a torquey motor too, and you can feel it. Its thirsty, though, I can blame the canopy for that. Im averaging 13L/100km. The fuel tank is only 80L, which is annoying, they could have fitted a bigger one with ease!!!

The ride is pretty good, not just for a ute, but in general. I'm sitting on an OME 2 inch lift (when i get the rear leaves fixed up). Its not as harsh as the Prado was, but still feels responsive and planted.

Its quiet in the cabin, like really quiet, to the point that I couldnt tell the motor was running until the LCD screen with the tacho came up.

The engine bay is cramped, really cramped. There is barely any free space - theres a bit between the fuse box and the firewall on the passenger size - I think this is where people put 2nd fuel filters etc.

There are about 6 different terminals on the positive side of the battery, so you know its electronically controlled. The smart charging system means you cannot connect anything to the negative post of the battery, nor can you jump start from the negative. All new negatives go to the body/chassis. Thankfully for me, the canopy conducts to the chassis, so it is a big negative post!!

The canopy is fantastic. Big(ish) dog box on the drivers side, 80L MSA drop slide on the passenger side, and about a metre of free open space across the back.

Im still working on where to put my 2nd battery, but I have a Redarc BCDC 1220 IGN for charging and the fuse block from the Prado. Norweld provide a panel to install all of the electrics onto.

Well, thats about it for now - any questions, ask away...

      Cheers!

      • Like I said earlier, after driving my cousins new Ranger and how nice and powerful it is compared to the Prado I think it will be at the top of my list of next vehicle to purchase and will probably set up almost identical to yours with the canopy.
Love the idea of it as I'm sick of wrecking the back of the Prado.

        • Well done mate. Honestly the Prado needs an update, a real update. It is way behind the times now. A ute with a canopy is by far the best setup in my opinion. You can set them out so well.

Unfortunately due to my health all utes on the market result in a trigger to my health issues, otherwise PXII ranger would have been my pick too. New hilux is also a major major let down...

All the best mate, great setup. Norweld are exceptional quality.

Cheers! The Prado did everything I asked of it, so I cant really fault it, but you're right, at that end of the market, you could expect a few extra bits and pieces.
I can only assume that you're referring to the ride in the utes, or sarcasm...WRT your health...?
The hilux was nowhere near as well equipped and lacked the up and go of the Ranger, so it lost out.

            • Well thats a relief!

Over the last couple of days I've read all 28 pages of this topic, making careful notes as i went. Why?

I've been looking at Prado's for a few months for use as a tourer and high country trips. A used one made a lot more sense to me because the new cost was a bridge too far. Renowned reliability was reassuring, so Prado's with 40-100k it was. My research took me here amongst other places, both researching possible issues to look for and dreaming about upgrades.

Last weekend I went looking and came across one at Etheridge Ford in Ringwood. It was White, had a bullbar, AT's lift, rack and a CB. The first five mods I was planning. All were the right stuff too, plus a few others. A look through the log book was reassuring. The price was right. We offered subject to a mechanical inspection.

I came back here, looking once more for pitfalls to point out to the mechanic for tomorrows inspection. And here I stumbled. Its a relief because Spilsy's attention to detail is obvious and that's a massive confidence booster.

So, all going to plan and subject to the fine tooth comb, Spilsy's well loved Prado gets its new lease on life with me.

Cheers for all your posts and advice to one another. It's helped me immeasurably. Hopefully a new thread begins tomorrow (if it passes) and my triumphs and tragedies can keep the forum love going.
