    I checked my lights tonight and found the following;

    Light Switch OFF position
all exterior lights are On (headlights, front parking lights, tail lights and number plate lights), but interior displays are not dimmed.

    Light Switch Park position
    as above but no headlights

    Light Switch ON
same as OFF, but interior dimmed.

There is no noticeable difference in low beam output between OFF and ON....which I find just a little bizarre!!
So really the switch should be labelled Day and Night.

Not quite sure why so much time is spent trying to reduce electrical load for the sake of fuel economy and emissions, and then have all the lights on whether it's day or night. I might contact Toyota and see what they say.

This means you can leave your light switch at parkers which then come on when you start the car rather than the the headlights coming on.
Until you drive at night and can't see out the windshield from the blinding light from the display.

      This topic is so stupid.

I rang Toyota and what I'm seeing is the new standard for Prados (at least for GXL, not sure about other models)

Whenever the engine is running all exterior lights are On regardless of switch position. This includes headlights, tail lights, number plate illumination and front parking lights. Only difference is when Park is selected on the switch, then only the headlights turn off.

I asked if they could disable the feature and the answer is no.

If that is the case, what determines when the dash and radio lights dim?

            Thanks,

              The interior lights operate as expected;

Switch = Off, dash illumination in daylight mode
Switch = Park or On, dash illumination in night mode

Not happy with Toyota on this one, they should at least put in proper DRLs on all models rather than using headlights.

Got a new P150 GXL recently and I can also say that this headlight 'feature' is doing my head in.
I really dont care either way that my lights are on in the daytime, as I agree with the posts about this making me more visible. The issue is at night time! when i come to drive home after work, I have driven half way home before i realise that my lights are not all on. It would have been quite reasonable for the park lights or the little LED's on the bullbar to be on all the time, but when it is your full headlights that come on as soon as you start your car, it is easy to set off driving in the dark with your lights technically switched off. it isnt until you notice that your satnav is still in day-mode and is so bright at night that you get retinal burn-in.

I brought it up with the service manager when dropping the car in for first service, apparently they receive plenty of complaints about the lights on the GXLs.

Does the GX have this 'feature'?

Yes it does . The feature will extend to all Toyotas I am told by the service people.

I plan to bring it up with my service manager too when i drop in for the first service. I presume that they will have a well rehearsed response by now ha

I believe this will change with the update arriving in a couple of months, all models will have LED Hi/Lo which means LED DRLs too I am sure. As for the existing models, it is a non issue. Operation of the car is the same as every car every made.

Turn you light switch on at night, turn it off in the day - why is this so hard to understand? Did people have issues with your previous cars operating the lights?

At least the full exterior lights come on regardless, some models have backlit displays regardless of headlight bulbs being lit or not (Subaru looking at you).

I think if you forget to turn the switch at night and back again at day you are in the same class of driver that cruises the freeway with you left indicator constantly flashing, and maybe even the ones driving around in the sunlight with hi-beams on too.

Still can't believe people think this is an issue.

Headlights on during the day = safer driving. Your vehicle is more visible to other drivers.

Having your headlights on whilst having your engine is running does not drain your battery, it does not increase fuel consumption and your headlights will last for years before needing to be replaced.

If you are worried about what other people think about you having your headlights on then just use the park lights.

Someone also said that if you dont turn your headlights to 'on' at then you are driving around at night with your lights off....... No you arent because all external lights come on automatically, so will never be driving around with your lights off.

It is also very easy to tell when you dont have your light switched to on or off because your lcd display screen will either be bright or dimmed.

The people at Toyota must roll their eyes at these complaints about the headlights.

Or the fact buyers really don't research before committing if it's such an issue. I hear the Pajero has pretty led drops standard now.

Because you arrogant pair of yokels, not everyone drives solely on bitumen, some actually spend their time driving around paddocks and river-bends...and since we actually own the damn vehicles we want to decide for ourselves.
