A little bit off the topic, but does any know if it is possible to replace the standard day time running lights in the 2014 GXL model with the LED running lights from the 2014 VX/Kakadu models? I admit that the LED day lights were one of the real aesthetic differences between the GXL and VX but we ended up going with the GXL. If there was some way to after market fit the LED day lights to the GXL model I'd be very interested to hear it.
I was thinking along a similar line.
Put VX/Kakadu headlights in the GXL.
But I am thinking the plugs and fuse location may be there but not programed in the computer to work.
Daytime lights rule, why would you want to get rid of them....?
The amount of dickheads on the roads in sydney who can't see you without light on during the daytime is ridiculous, so why turn them off...?
You can replace all the lights with LED to reduce power consumption. You can buy most of it in fleeBay (ebay). I did mine on my 2014 Prado GXL.
Buy a Cree or a COB or a 5630 led for better life span.
Not sure I'd call it a tail light, it's a headlight I think. Same light that comes on when the headlights are on and yes mine has always been on with the lights in the off position. Had my 1 month inspection at toyota and had a little trouble trying to get them to understand how these things work, but they eventually came back and said it cant be changed. I'd really like toyota or the dealer to explain why it says in the manual that the headlights come on at reduced intensity when they look the same to me. Might put a current meter on there for the conclusive answer.
Any results to post? I suspect their "reduced intensity" claim is total BS. I'm guessing the only way to sort it will be to put a relay in circuit.
Hi Joogers........Any luck yet?
I just bought a new GXL (OCT 2014) and the headlights always on is a really "annoying feature".
Not because i have a problem with being visible on the roads, but as soon as i turn the switch to "park lights", the dash and LCD screen go dim. Not the best if you drive with sunglasses on! I feel pretty ridiculous just driving to the deli to get milk and the paper and having to have my lights on??
There must be a way to disable them??

Nope, just get used to driving around with your lights on, that's what I did.
You know you can't see them from the drivers seat. It annoyed me to start with, but you quickly forget they are even on. I think the most annoying thing is the fact there is not option to turn them off, more than the fact they are on.

Why. What's so silly? Just enjoy your nice car and stop thinking about what everyone else isn't thinking!

The DRL part is additional to the parkers and low beams. Probably needs to be rewired and there may be different switch gear on the stalk too.
