OK, I'll stick my head up. I think it's a poor design. A couple of times my wife has driven at night with the headlight switch in the OFF position. The only real difference is that the instrumentation stays at the much brighter "daytime" level but I feel that this causes a subtle distraction and reduction to ones "night vision". A most undesirable effect at night. It's an easy mistake to make with this design. Rest assured Symo she doesn't drive around with her blinkers on and high beam blazing during the day.

And I roll my eyes every time time I have to look at the stupid "Tail Light Indicator" indicator light which remains ON in this vehicle whenever it is in operation, regardless of switch, lever or pedal position. I think of it as Toyota's way of reminding me what a cheap bastard I am for getting the GXL instead of a more expensive model with LED DRLs.

    Cheers

I've seen a couple of cars driving around with the DRLs blazing at night as well. On our other Toyota, the switch is left on Auto.

This mod with super bright LED parker globes brings the GX and GXL to a Kakado look alike. Can be done for $25.00 from jay car.

In the scheme of things it's no great issue but.....

Toyota and most other manufacturers, have spent a small fortune trying to reduce fuel consumption, emissions, electrical load etc. We now have smart alternators to further reduce load....and then they throw it all out the window by using 110W of halogens as DRLs rather than spend a few more $$ and put in LEDs.

No such thing as something for nothing, if the lights need 110W, then that comes out of the fuel. And if we're pedantic and add in the sidelights and number plate lights, there's another 30W or so. If we extrapolate those figures over say 10,000 Prados, that's about 10,000 x 140W = 1.4million Watts. That's quite a few Prado engines running flat out just to power lights!

Rather than rolling their eyes, the marketing folks at Toyota should listen to their customers and think hmmm, unhappy customers, that's never good. How can we make something good even better.

On a side note I just replaced my first headlight, put in some Phillips vision xtremem 100% and they are quite good. Still halogen but a little whiter and much brighter. H11 and wedges for the parkers. Although the package says they last 400hrs, I hope they last longer (the originals did 1750hrs - also phillips).
