  • I Just bought a 95 Series but no area on this forum.... ? (I'm a Prado Newbie)

    Hey folks

Well after many years of wanting a Prado I finally bought a 2000 Diesel 95 Series Prado, its a real nice beast and I've had it 4 days and love it.

However I'm new to Prado land and ask the following questions and would be in your debt if you could offer some valuable advice -

    - Ive a 95 Series but can't see any areas on this forum for the series - is it part of the 90 Series maybe ?

    - the ODO clicked over 180,000K 2 days after I bought it and the timing belt service warning light come on, I thought it was supposed to be 150,000, there is no mention of the timing belt being changed at 150,000 is this common or has do you think the last service centre set this as a genuine reminder ?

    - Does anyone know a reputable service centre to get the timing done considering I wouldn't know where to start, though I would be happy to have a try to change it but need guidance - Im located in Kellyville, NSW.

-Im keen to join a local 4x4 club can you recommend any in the Hills area (NSW) or a wider area

Sorry there dumb questions but keen to ensure Im getting everything right in order to look after me new beast.

Cheers all- sorry if Ive posted in the wrong area as well.

    Hi Mark,
Welcome to the forums and glad your enjoying your new Prado. As far as im aware the 95 series was the last of the 90 series with upgrades to the interior safety and the 96kw donk. Im sure other 90 series owners will shed much more light on it so yes, jump into the 90 series section and search bars. Anoterh tip id to go to google and type in "pradopoint (and what your looking for)" can make the searching for older threads a bit easier.

Not sure on any info your chasing over in NSW, but I do see there are a few 4WD clubs that side and you will also meet allot of guys on here from your way. Anyhow, good luck with it and start a rig build up thread so we can all see how she develops as you get bitten by the bug harder reading through the mods guys are doing to these trucks.

    Cheers

Officially, the 90 series is the short wheel base model, and the 95 series is the long wheel base model. And as the 90 was not sold in Australia, we class the 95 as either
97 VX Grande, with front & rear air lockers, ARB Sahara winch bar with tigers 11 winch, 2" EFS lift, 265/75/16 Achilles Desert hawk XMT, and more.

        Welcome Mark
I have a a diesel 95 Prado I bought new in 2000 and the ODO shows well over 330,000 and has not missed a beat.
There are others on this forum that have done some great things with their 95s so look around and you'll find most of what you want to know and then some.

Hi Mark welcome to the forum - as mentioned above if your doing research on your 95 series and you in the 90 series section your in the rite spot.
As far as the timing belt warning light goes I will be having the belt done asap unless you know the true history of the vehicle and know for sure when it was replaced and it is with in the service period of the belt. But only traveled 180 000 km there is plenty of life in her yet.

            Welcome aboard

ODO usually rewinded (for sales purposes  ) in most cases where i am from. i highly doubt in Australia, 2000 vehicle not hitting 200k, it could be why the ODO is not that high... my two cents though...

^ I was surprised too but we live in a >two car culture. Very often the second (off roader) car is used just weekends/trips. Mine's 03 and has not got passed 140K yet. 3rd owner, asked previous about it and he bought it off an elderly couple, he just used it for weekends so low Kay cars do exist. There are bad eggs in all societies I dare say...just got to know what to look out for as changing log books cannot be hard????!!

There's plenty of 95 series Prado's in Australia with under 200000 legit km's on them. I bought mine (2000 model) just over a year ago with 125000km on it (with full service history).

Traded in my 95 series a bit over a year ago with 100,026 genuine kms on the clock and a full service history. It was a 2002 model and when we got it it was 10 months old and had 23,000 kms on the clock. We don't do high K's as we live close to the city, hubby uses public transport, and I only drive a short distance to work.

I'm more surprised when I see 2 and 3 year old Prados at the local dealer with close to or over 100,000 kms on them. I have to wonder where they are getting them from, can't see many of the locals as driving such distances in such a relatively short space of time.

Hi Mark I have just got my 95 back yesterday from getting the head replaced had a crack in number 1 cylinder and 2 had a broken glow plug snapped off and jumped around denting piston and valves. It was still driving okay just loosing radiator fluid out of the overflow bottles overflow because of exhaust gasses getting out of crack and pressurising the radiator. It had 190,000k's on it so we got things replaced while it was apart new timing belt seeing they get done every 100,000 k's.The mechanic said the light will come on when it gets to each 100,000 so we will have to take it back to him at 200,000 when the light comes on and he will reset it so it goes off.So they can be reset but you need to know if yours got done at 100,000 or did they just keep driving it with the light on.

I had my timing belt replaced at 150,000km. You sure they get changed every 100,000km? Or is diesel different?

It may have had it changed at 80 000km and is due again now, I think the diesel is every 90 000 / 100 000km but could be wrong - I changed my v6 at 130 000 km knowing it was due at 150 000km

Regardless of Scheduled belt change intervals, like fishfinder says, if you don't know the history of the belt, the warning light is on and you cant definitely be sure it is still in life get it replaced ASAP. It might cost a few bucks but if the belt is original and it fails its gonna cost you a dam site more.

Definitely can't argue with that! I guess that's the sucky thing with a vehicle with no service history. As soon as you get it, you service it as though its never been serviced before.
