  • Weird Noise on 1998 prado GXL

    Hi all,

I'm new here. seen some of the posts and is seems to be a fun/helpful group.

I'm looking at getting into 4WD and getting prado seems to be a good option. I've got no knowledge about 4WD whatsoever and VERY LIMITED knowledge about mechanics and stuff so bare with me. I know this is gonna be costly but hey gotta start somewhere right?

Here's the Deal. I'm looking at getting a 1998 Prado GXL It's got 245.000 Ks on the clock but it's been well looked after. and All service done according to the manual. Never taken off-road before.

It all seems to be working pretty good mechanically but It's making this strange sound. It comes from the front of the vehicle. Seems to be close to the wheel. It's kind of a humming sound but it's not constant. It's frequency varies depending on the speed (like humm humm humm) get it?. It only seems to happen when the car has warmed up if you just start it and take off seems to be fine. It also happens at low speed. it goes away when you go over 50-60 kph.

it doesn't go away when you apply brakes so my guess is it's not them. sometimes it goes away when turning right (like on round abouts) but not always.

I was wondering if anyone knew anything about that.

    Thanks guys

I've had similar in two previous cars. One turned out to be worn front hub bearings the other was a misshapen tire. One was definitley cheaper than the other.

yeah bearing id say... jack up that wheel and wiggle the wheel around ... small amount of movement is fine but if its a lot then its the bearing

Depends on what Tires you have on

I honestly don't know the cost of the bearing replacement - Mine was over 3 years ago on a 2002 Xtrail that needed both hubs doing, but I'm guessing its going to be around $350-450 could be more, could be less. Parts ($150-$250) + at least a couple of hours labour (~$100 p/h for most mechanics much more for Toyota dealer).

Thanks r4ndll. I guess I'd have to take it to a mechanic to have a look at it before making a decision.

I've read in a couple of websites it could be misshapen tire.

Could possibly be a uni joint. I had similar with my Prado and was the rear universal joint. Was a humming/vibration at a low frequency but was occuring 90km/h+ and got worse as I increased speed. It came more towards the rear center of the vehicle though. Was because the uni's hadn't been greased in so long and is a common issue.

                  Hey Thanks for your input.

I've been looking at videos with bad U-Joint and it doesn't sound quite like it.
In this case I don't feel any vibration and it only happens at low speed and also after you've driven for around 10 mins.

Does the sound get slower or faster depending on vehicle speed, like when some thing is turning ??......Cheers Steve

You could adjust your tyre pressures to see if it is the tyres i.e. if you raise a few psi it should take a bit longer to warm up and the noise to start. Or swap the tyre left to right so that they run in the opposite direction and see if the noise is still there.

Whack your spare on each corner to eliminate a tyre causing the problem. You could also put up on car stands, wack into gear and try it that way with some body listening for you close by, but obviously DONOT get under vehicle while running doing this. I had an annoying squeak in mine after having it lifted (my 95 series not my 120) it turned out to be a dry front joint. It was on the shaft and the little bastard of a grease nipple was hardly visible and was not in any of the service/mechanical books you buy. It was driving me insane with me hanging out doors, wife driving along, hanging out rear cargo doors etc doing stupid things trying to find it. Took it to my mate who worked for Toyota (had own workshop now) he said I'll fix it in 2 minutes, I thought yeah "no it all" he pointed to all the grease nipples I said done them all TWICE he said bet you didn't do this one, nope I hadn't, he said this is one every one misses. Never another squeak to be heard lol. If you lived closer I would come and help you try & find the noise but your a bit to far away lol.... Cheers Steve
