  • Good or bad idea? 150 V6 with 140.000+ kms...

    Hi guys,

By way of introduction, my name is Seb and I have been reading quite a bit on this great forum. I'm originally from Europe, but have been living in Australia for almost four years now. I enjoy it a lot - especially getting out there and exploring this great country.

It has long been my dream to buy a 4WD, kit it out and travel around Oz. I've finally managed to free up some time and save up enough money to do it. Initially, I had my heart set on a GU Patrol - until I actually drove one, that is! Since I will also need to use the fourby as a city run around and seeing that I live in an apartment complex with fairly small parking spaces, I decided the Patrol was just too big and truck-like in handling for my purposes. So out I went to look at Prados - and I'm hooked! It's exactly what I need, and I've been on the quest for a suitable one ever since. Planning to go with Petrol, as I can get better vehicles in my price range of around $30k.

One of my main criteria for selecting one (besides it not being a lemon) is resale value. I may have to return to Europe at the end of the year, so it is paramount for me to be able to sell the Prado fast and at a reasonable price (everything can be sold fast if it is discounted enough, but I'm trying to not lose too much money!).

In light of this, I am considering two options:

    1. A late model, high km example, i.e. 150 V6 with above average kms
    2. A 2008 - 2009 120 model with average or below kms for the age

For option 1 specifically, I am currently looking at a GXL in silver with 142.000 kms on the clock. It has a full service book (except for two services), was owned by a multinational oil company, but from looking at it it seems it's never been off road. Feels more like an exec car.

It would be terrific if you could help me out with the following questions:

    a) in terms of resale value and ease of sale, would you go with option 1 or 2? Why? (btw - I'm aware of differences between 120 and 150 models thanks to this forum, but none of them matter much to me. Only concerned with resale at this point).

    b) regarding the 150: Apart from missing two services (I think 50 and 70, but need to double check), some of them were also quite late e.g. 5-7k over the recommended mileage. Is this a worry?

    c) I'm still trying to find out what use the vehicle was being put to, but seeing that it's done more than 35,000 kms per year, I'm assuming they are mostly country / high way. What would be the most desirable use for such a high km vehicle? I'm assuming highway?

If anyone can shed some light on this, I would be very grateful!

Hoping to be a Prado owner soon!

    Cheers,

    Seb

I reckon you will be ok with either of those if they suit your needs and have been looked after and pass all the usual checks.

I have never been one for buying vehicles with resale value in mind. It seems like a bit of a falsehood to me. I buy a vehicle that suits me at the time and sell it for whatever I can get when I'm done with it.

If you can stretch your budget, there is a 120 D4D for sale by a member here. It has pretty much everything you need to go touring. Yes you will pay more for the diesels, but they hold their value more than the petrol models, which you say is something thats important to you.

If you're really tight for cash on the purchase price, older 120 V6's pop up quite regularly for around $15-$25k. Many of these are unmodded, clean skins, so you will be spending your "savings" on accessories.

Is this the one you are referring to, Beach?

        http://www.pradopoint.com/showthread...4D-with-extras

Can't stretch my budget that far unfortunately...

Any more opinions on the 150 V6 GXL I'm considering?

        Thanks in advance, guys!

Hi. I've also been lurking, well doing research really

Personally, I dont think a vehicle with high mileage will be easy to resell, especially if its service records are not up to date.
If its an ex mining or oil company vehicle I'd steer clear regardless of the mileage.

Couple of other things I always like to think about before I commit to a vehicle:
          Why is it so cheap?
Are there other vehicles available at a similar price for their condition (ie mileage, age, model) A quick check on Carsales brings up only one 150 under $40K, well $39990 to be exact.
Does the vehicle have an RACV check?
You might want to check the wheel arches to see if they have been spraypainted recently. This will raise alarm bells for me (why would you do that? Was the vehicle in an accident).

There is a saying in Afrikaans "Goedkoop koop, is duur koop!" which roughly translates to "If you buy cheap, it will cost you!"

One final suggestion, if you are already questioning these points any other buyer will surely do the same?

          My 2 cents...

Or the literal translation being "Cheap buy is dear buy".

Thanks for your input guys. Agree that one needs to be careful when an offer seems to be too good to be true.

Have therefore shifted my mind to another vehicle: 120 V6 GXL, built 2009. It seems to be in pretty good nick overall, but for the first 40,000 kms the vehicle has had only one service per 20,000 kms (i.e. 10k and 20k services were performed and stamped at 20k, and then 30k and 40k were performed and stamped at 40k).

Is this something I should be worried about? Any opinions will be helpful.

All other services appear to have been performed as scheduled. Vehicle is a one-owner privately owned car, sold through a Toyota dealer (a trade-in on a new car). Asking $30,000, with slightly more than 100,000 km on the clock.

Their ain't much difference between 100 and 140, if the 140 has a better service history I would buy over a poorly serviced one.

Thanks, Hutch. I know there's not much difference in terms of mileage, but what I'm worried about is the fact that early on its life, the 09 Prado in question was only serviced once per 20,000 kms. Do you consider this poor service? Poor enough to stay away form?

The 2010 had a similar situation, however much later (around 80,000 km).

                  Cheers,

                  Seb

30k seems to be asking top dollar for that 120. The used market might be a bit different in Victoria, but I would be looking at a lot more before I bought that one.

You can get 120 series GX diesel, 6 speed manual D4D models over here with 85k+ on the clock and around the $32k mark. Comes down to weather you really want the GXL model and auto options or if you want the cash to spend on other mods for the trip or how capable you need the truck to be?

I read that to mean earlier 120s, e.g. 2003-2006 whereas the one I'm looking at is one of the latest 120 one can get?

Comes down to weather you really want the GXL model and auto options or if you want the cash to spend on other mods for the trip or how capable you need the truck to be?
Don't care so much about GXL, but do want Auto. Would also prefer the V6 after driving both - so much smoother, and I'm not too worried about fuel consumption!

Truck will need some modding - bull bar, 50mm lift, roof rack, drawers in back, etc. So ideally I would only spend around the $25k mark.

So this means either going back a few years (e.g. many examples from 2006 and 2007 available around that price tag), or negotiating with the dealer for a better deal.

Back to my earlier question - still hoping to get some opinions on this. I read many threads on this forum where people emphasise the importance of a full service history.

The 120 I'm looking at has missed two services (10k and 30k), but is otherwise up to scratch.

Is this critical from a mechanical standpoint (mostly due to missed oil changes), or can I use it as a bargaining point with the dealer? Will it make it more difficult to sell afterwards?
