  • Can't get my Prado over 120km/h???? WHY?

    Hi all

I recently took my 2006 Turbo Diesel Prado (Auto) on a country drive from Perth to Albany (Australia). I could not for the life of me get my car over 120 km/h. I was not towing anything, just had myself and the missus in the car. This obviously proved very frustrating when trying to overtake. I've tried to find info on forums throughout the Internet but have been unsuccessful so far. Hoping someone here can help me out.

    Thanks

Must be speed limited? Mine does ........... well .......... I believe it does significantly faster speeds than that.....

    Never mind.

mlc may have just voided something......

Did you check if there are any obstructions under the pedal? Is this the first time you've tried to take it past 120km/h?

          Hi guys

          Thanks for replying.

The drive is four hours each way. The missus drove down there while I slept (Just finished night shift) and she reported the problem to me when I woke up. Being a male I didn't believe her for one minute thinking there's no way that's possible. So on the way back to Perth I found the same issue. The only way it could get past 120 (125km/h) was when going downhill. The pedal was flat to the floor. It was the first time we have taken it country driving. It was a smooth drive nonetheless just a slow one.

Have you had it since new? I truly suspect its speed limited and may have been an ex company vehicle. I have reason to believe mine does in excess of 140kph with a trailer attached. I do note yours may be the older motor (non D4D), but even then one would expect better than 120kph

Speed limited? or fuel supply issue? (look at filter 1st) also seen similar when an extra fuel filter is fitted.

Lack of fuel or lack of air would be where I start, as Mick said check the fuel filter, especially the one between the tanks as many service places don't realize that is the one that should be changed at 20 thou intervals. Also check the air filter, although if that was blocked you would see excessive black smoke.

                Cheers Andrew

as stated above, fuel filter and air filter, but i would check to see if the electronic throttle positioning might have been moddified. Clogged fuel filter could be problem but given you have not mentioned about loss of power, i doubt if that's the case. other place to look is the overdrive, if the top gear is not engaging, speed could linger right around 110-120.

If it is an ex-company vehicle it could be speed limited. Speed limited Prado's i have come across, the limiter is linked to the cruise control. Removing the fuse for the cc may kill the limiter.

Just another symptom of having a diesel I guess.....

(dare say though as others have mentioned, it may have been speed limited in a previous life.)

I knew a fella in WA that did just that while smoking whacky weed. He concluded his speedo was wrong, he was going very very fast and the weed empowered him to easily cope with the speeding as it heightened his awareness.
