  • Dual battery install with Redarc SBI212 - Question about Circuit Breakers

    Hi,

In the process of obtaining the kit for a dual battery install & have a question about the circuit breakers between the Redarc unit and the batteries.

Using a Redarc SBI212 - standard install with override (http://www.redarc.com.au/handy-hints...c_sbi_install/)

I plan to use Blue Sea Systems 7149 187-Series Circuit Breakers (200A) between the redarc unit and the batteries. Each terminal on these CBs is designated Line and Load respectively.

I had planned to connect as follows: Main Battery --> [CB#1 (Line), CB#1 (Load)] --> SBI212 --> [CB#2 (Line), CB#2 (Load)] --> Aux Battery. I had not considered the role of Line vs Load when using the SBI override to allow starting from the AUX battery. Is this an issue (ie the starter motor load would be connected to the Line side of the Circuit breakers)?

    Thanks,

    Steve

    It won't make any difference.

Thanks Leigh. Once everything is installed I'll be ordering one of your voltage boosters

      Cheers,

Hi Steve and what size cable are you planning on using?

          hi drivesafe,

I was planning to use 2B&S if I could keep the run under 3m (which I'm pretty sure I can). If not then going upto 1B&S

I got this from the the Redarc site & ran it through their cable size / voltage drop calculator.

I'm hoping to fit the redarc unit & circuit breakers in the next couple of weeks. Once they're in I'll get a real measurement on the required cable lengths & purchase accordingly.

          Any suggestions / concerns?

          Thanks,

          Steve

Hi again steve and it does not sound like you are going to be fitting an electric winch.

If this is the case, there is very little advantage to using cable any bigger then 6B&S.

This is both suitable for charging batteries and for emergency jump starting.

6B&S is rated at 100 amps when used in a dual battery system and around 400 amps when used as start motor cable.

Now this may sound like the wrong info, but you only need 60 amp circuit breakers and I only supply 50 auto resetting circuit breakers and you can still jump start through a 50 amp circuit breaker.

One more point, if both batteries are mounted in the engine bay and the cable between them is in the engine bay, you do not need a circuit breaker at all and your set up is quite safe.

If you have a look around your engine bay, you will see there are thick cables with no protection on them. For example, your starter motor and alternator cables.

              Thanks drivesafe

Always had the feeling the Redarc diagram was a slight overkill for the (hopefully) rare jump start from AUX battery. I have no plans for a winch, the 2nd battery is for a fridge, kids' entertainment and potentially an inverter whilst we travel.

Lesson learned - I should have posted before ordering the circuit breakers. Given they're currently in transit I'll install them & the 2B&S (at least I have future proofed it in the event winching requirements change)

Appreciate the input. Hopefully others can benefit & save a few $ by not overspecing things

              cheers,

              Steve

                Steve,

As you have the circuit breakers in transit you could still use them doesn't hurt
to be over safe. The other option is to do as I have done, put on the earth side
of the battery of the aux and if they can take the starter current same on the main.

This gives you a quick easy way to isolate the batteries if you need to ie not
traveling and car is garage you can isolate the aux easily to stop radio's and
any other permanent load discharging it or under a fault condition.

Friend with a similar setup, got into work one day just as I was getting out of my car and
said his radio had been playing up, turning off and on, he opened up the bonnet
and and starting messing around with the radio wiring, where he had a fuse mounted
on the fire wall, when he moved the wiring sparks started flying and smoke started coming
wafting up. He immediatlery used the isolators on the batteries and all was well. Turned
out a main power feed to his HF radio had came out of the fuse holder, he had soldered the
end of the wire befor he inserted into the holder and did up the securing screw, a big no no wire
was rubbing on some metal tubing on the fire wall and arcing.

                Cheers

Well finally got started installing stuff

Hopefully get the other CB mounting plate made up this week & installed on the weekend

Leigh's booster is on the fridge ready to install.

                  To semi-hijack my own thread
                  - What compound is recommended to insulate the terminal studs & exposed lugs on the solenoid and circuit breakers? Is there a specific sikaflex product I should use?
                  - is there a recommended location on the chassis for the ground / -ve connection for the second battery?

                  Thanks,

                  Steve

I would source boots if available.

There's a a loom chassis earth point if the aux is going behind the drivers
                    side headlight.
