  • Mansfield to Talbotville - Which option do you want to take?

We have four different routes to Talbotville you can choose between. We need to know you preferred option so we can have trip leaders for the right numbers.
1- Take the Scenic Mansfield-Whitfield Rd and cruise past three cellar door wineries on your way to Bright for a top up of food and fuel. This is for wino's, those towing vans and on-road trailers and PPers that do not want to get dirty before they need to.

2- Take King Basin Rd (Rd by name only), Speculation Rd, Cobbler Lake Track and Cobbler Rd to the Buffalo Valley and then on to Bright. Mainly good off-road tracks and bush roads with some sections a bit rough. several water crossings and huts on the way. OK for off-road trailers.

    3- Deleted

4- Take the two day back country option via Lovick's Hut, King Billy Track and Wonnangatta Valley. Very scenic, no trailers, no resupply before Talbotville and air-bag suspension at own risk.

1 since we have the van guessing 2 might be a bit risky

Put me down for option 4 James. I presume that's the steepest, toughest, wettest most remote option
        Cheers, Ben.

Better not let SWMBO see this as she will see the promise of 3 cellar doors and want to do option 1

          My option is number 4.

Just out of curiosity which wineries under Option 1 James? Mr Fido is the wine buff, not me so much.

Kristy wants option 1 for the wine. I want option 2 as there is no wine.

So put me down for option 2 and I will not tell Kristy.

2 or 3. Just weighing up the following:
                  1. An offroad trailer with only manual brakes
                  2. A capable Prado Grande the usual Grande crap, F&R lockers, chip, 3 inch, that has managed everything chucked at it with a trailer to date
                  3. A adventurous death wish aka Lea.
                  4. 4 maxtrax, winch, tree trunk protector, insurance......

Has anyone done 3 with a trailer before?

Is option 4 do-able without a winch? If so, count me in. If not, it looks like Option 3 for me.

I don't know that the Big Dune on the Border Track agrees with this statement Rob. There's got to be a picture from the SA GTG floating around with proof of your 'loss of momentum'...

In terms of my preference: I am booking in for option 2. Does this run include The Staircase, or is it harder than what we would encounter on this trip?

                        Hi All,

I am prepared for Option 2 or Option 1. Not a Wino though.

I would like do to option 3, but maybe another time.
I do have 2" lift, 1" taller tyres, ( so 3" all up) rear air locker and a Tvan.

We (7 prados) just drove 4. no problems last week. Dry conditions.
Wet could require a winch if your tyres or right foot weren't enough.

                            The staircase is no longer!
Like many other great high country tracks it has been mown down to rubble. Just a rough track now.
