  • Dust, where does it come in?

    Hi,
I have bought 120 about 6 months ago from grey nomad, the car was full of red dust, it was everywhere in the air-conditioning in the doors, under the carpet, under the pillar trimmings, under the roof trimmings. So I spent about a month taking all the trims off the car (seats and doors, and dash and radio etc.. basically I stripped it). I cleaned the air-condition blades front and back, I cleaned the heating ducts (as far as I could). I have found one grommet in the back that has fallen out when the trailer wiring was install I assume, so I thought that is where the dust was getting in. However I have taken the car out into gravel roads since then, and the dust is back; under the boot trimming (you can see it on the jack). Where could it be coming into the car? Would it be getting in through the pins that hold the plastic flares? I do not think that is coming in through the door seals; as the dust is accumulating under the trimmings, and is blown in through the back air-condition fans (which sucks the air from around the back)
    Any suggestions?
    Thank you

have you checked the filter element behind the glove box

behind the glove box is a filter , the gxl doesnt come with the filter in the tray? i used some industrial air con mat
and cut it to fit the slide out tray,, food for thought

      Good luck , Butane

Unless you are going to hermetically seal your vehicle, you won't be keeping any dust out. One trip through red bull dust and its tinged red forever. The same with sand a trip to Fraser Island.

The best way to keep dust out is always use external air on heating and cooling. This creates positive pressure in the car and stops dust coming in vents and seals. The only time i turn to internal is if passing another vehicle in dusty conditions. I found a grommet off my 90 last month from tow bar loom but hardly any dust. BTW it seems a Toyota trait to leave the grommets out when they fit bars, thats the third time i have seen someone mention it on here

Thanks, I felt something there when I was washing the car other day, but could not get in there to see without taking the bumper off. Do you know how these vents work, it seems like they have trapdoors or something. Anybody has any idea how they work?

Thanks, I have found the filter when I took the trimmings off the car, it was full of dust and leaves, obviously the previous owner had never changed it, neither did Toyota when they did their services, but that is not where the dust comes in, at least not in my car.
              Cheers

I will try, did 1000km on Fraser over christmas, and it has been OK, it is the salt that is more of a problem, but I am slowly getting rid of it

                  All the above ..

I have been trying to fix this since 2009. The adding of thin A/C foam over the Toyota filter in the glove box helps. Don’t have on recirculation if dust is coming over the bonnet (as per hand book). Switch to fresh air up high to create a positive pressure in the car.

I pulled the jack bracket out and discovered the vents in the bottom of the tyre well, which is the spot the dust is getting into the back. It’s just a flimsy plastic flap. Need to come up with a fix for this.

I also had the same problem with dust in the jack area, what I found was 3 or 4 captive female threads in the body that if you blow air in them it comes out in the area of the jack, sealed holes with silastic, all fixed. Lay on the ground and look up between towbar and fuel tank, the area is where the fuel tank straps bolt to the body, its like a channel section that goes from one side of vehicle to other, I am not too computer savvy so don't ask for photo,s Good luck, its a very bad design fault

Dust, where does it come in?

It's usually split grommets and things in around the jack area. When they do the towbar... and reverse sensor wiring they usually damage them..

It gets everyone, sorry couldn't help myself. The consolation now is that for future readers I am the goose. Ah well situation normal. I reckon a Toyota rowboat would be an expensive bit of kit.
