  • ADVICE re D4D and Older Diesel Engines

    G'day
New to this thread and organisation - just joined as a financial member and pleased to find it!

Would really appreciate some experienced advice re my ensuing purchase of a 2nd Hand Prado.
We are looking at a Grande around the 2008 vintage with a D4D engine - also found a nice 2005 with old version Diesel engine.
Read some info re the old and the newer Diesel engines and need some unbiased feedback please.

Your best bet is to look at the 120 diesel section. They are both good engines but not without the occasional issue. The 1kz has some history of cracking heads and also dropping glow plugs into the combustion chamber, which usually results in a full rebuild/short engine. Compared to the 1kd the 1kz produces less power and torque and the 1kd has better fuel consumption. The 1kd, particularly early ones, have/had issues with injector seats and injector life. Leaking injector seats can cause the oil to carbonise and these sticky lumps can block the oil pickup screen which will destroy the engine. Faulty injectors can also kill the engine.

Best advice for both engines is to check the service history carefully. And get an independent mechanic who understands the issues to go over the engines carefully. The usual due diligence applies as well.

With the 1kz I am not sure what checks can be done regarding the head other than the obvious signs like overheating or bubbles in the radiator. Change the glow plugs is an easy and sensible precaution given the age of these engines now. The 1kd injectors can be checked with a diagnostic tool and the sump screen inspected. If the injectors have already been changed try to get the invoice to see what was done.

There are threads about injector problems, injector prices and preventative measures. Have a good read.
