  • Grande adjustable variable shock absorbers

    Howdy Group,

Has anyone had to replace their front and rear shock absorbers on their Grande models? The oldest of the updated 120 Series Grande models (with the 5 speed autos) are now 9 years old, and probably in excess of 200,000 kms on the odometer.

Toyota Australia spare parts pricing for these shock absorbers is exhorbitant.

Just wondering if anyone has been able to source these special shock absorbers cheaper elsewhere.

Am thinking perhaps the Lexus GX470 in the USA may use the same shock absorbers, but it's a bit hard to find this detail.

The aftermarket shocks would do a better job even though you will lose the adjustment settings. The closest will be the Toughdog adjustables but the adjustment is manual. The dial is on the shocks and are prone to be broken off.

I'll second above and testify. Have the TD's adjustables and they're great but two dials have broken off so those two are not now adjustable? Don't go blindly buying new OEM stuff. It's very expensive and often not great! Yes you loose the comfort setting but it's no real biggie to a lot of peeps of have modified.

Try this site www.partsouq.com genuine tems shocks for $350 a piece . They are great when you hit a corrugated rd like cape York and you just click them to the soft setting and cruise over them . I drove the Creb track with 2 Bilstein shod 120s . My OEM tems shod 120 made the others look like pogo sticks . That comment came from the passenger of one of the most highly modified 120 s on pradopoint

I too have to replace my TEMS shocks which I love. I have searched the 'Partsouq' site, but can find all sorts of things, but not the TEMS shocks. Can you help me, as my mechanic is suggesting normal shocks.

Yep if you can't interpret the numbers on the partsouq website , you can cross reference it with the toyodiy site , they use the same diagrams and part numbers , but are apparently a crap load cheaper . My shocks have 197 000 ks on them . They probably don't work as well as they should , and will be replaced soon . They will not be replaced with aftermarket ummmm other shocks . I've replaced OEM shocks on my off and on road motorcycles with superior shocks from other performance shock manufacturers , but in this case ill be staying with the electronically adjustable OEM stuff . They work brilliantly . For any one who reads this and owns a base model 120 and says their shocks are crap , buy a grande and take it off road . There is a difference . You may note that I said OFF road . The grandes airbag suspension , doesn't lend itself to Ferrari like handling on road , but handles big loads better .

                Thanks Gang!
I have found the TEMS shock parts on Partsouq. Just one challenge before ordering. They only list TEMS shocks for RHS. I hope this is because right and left are the same, not because they don't have the LHS ones. Does anyone know? I was silly enough to call a local Toyota parts dept yo ask, but got very short shift. They wanted to know why I wanted to know a part number or two, saying that they might DO ALL THE WORK looking it up and I might buy elsewhere. What work? They seem to have forgotten that I paid them $70K for this car and deserve some help to keep it going until I can afford another (which won't be purchased there). Anyway, again thanks for the help to date. Great to know if they are the same both sides.

Once again, thanks for all the help. The genuine shocks came from Partsouq in UAE in just four days. Front price was $186AUD each instead of the ridiculous $800+ each quoted by Toyota dealer. Rears $330. I don't know Toyota warp them, but it would be more than the fronts. Freight for all four was $114. I did make one mistake and that was to order all four at once which took it over $1000 and into GST an duty territory. Wasted $220. Still, all four done with original TEMS parts for $1400 plus install. I am one happy camper. Just to mention, I also found amayama.com. Same pricing, but website catalogue a little easier to use. I now feel good about going away in June knowing I can cope with any corrugated roads we venture along. Thanks again.

Or is it only the rear shocks that are adjustable? I noticed the part numbers and diagram given here are only for the rear shocks.

Also the price Comps paid for front shock was $150 cheaper than rear.

Fronts and rears are adjustable timmy. If you look on the top of your fronts on your Grande, you will see the actuator which screws the valving up and down to soften or firm up your ride by the control switch on the centre console.

                            Hey Comps,

If the part numbers are 48530RH & 48540LH for front and rear, why are the rear shocks priced higher? The diagram shows the same part #'s front and rear. Doesn't make sense.

When I place the order I'm assuming I will need to order 2x 48530 (Rights side) & 2x 48540 (Left side).

Also do you need to replace any washers/bushes or anything when doing the job?
