  • 2014 PP GTG POST Trip maintenance.

Just spent a few hrs checking & servicing the old girl.

Just thought I would post my recommendations for a post trip check etc. In particular the gtg in the Vic high country & rivers.
In no particular order or priority:

Change rear diff oil. The rear LSD does a lot of work on those hills & also then gets a fair dunk in the rivers. Especially if you don't have breathers.
I don't have aftermarket breathers, & after all the reccies & trip there was still no water in any of my fluids. However the rear diff oil looked well used, this is standard.

This is what I use in Prado rear diffs

Check auto trans for water. If I had an auto after all that hill climbing & risk of water getting in I would change the auto fluid.
I changed my gearbox oil & transfer case oil. Gearbox oil was used & transfer case oil similar to new, this is standard.

This is what I use in Prado gearboxes.

It is recommended to lubricate your propeller shafts after water crossings. You have done a lot of water crossings.
There are 3 grease nipples on each shaft.

Check your tyres for severe damage. On tracks like billy goats its possible for them to get very cut up.

Check your fuel tanks for damage.

Visual check all nuts & bolts. Check Bullbar mounting bolts with a spanner. Check bottom of front strut nut, with vehicle on floor 19mm should be very tight. Check top of rear shock nut if no nylock is fitted.

Usual under bonnet fluid level checks. Check & clean air filter.

I will come back & edit as I remember things I forgot.

Don't forget to check the wheel nuts!

Took 2 days to clean mine properly, had big ding in rear fuel tank guard, removed and bashed out in 2 places, then resprayed, small dent in fuel tank where the biggest dent was, but all good! Have yet to check/change fluids

      Cheers

Think I will have a few dings to get out too Steve. The front bash plate took a bit of a hit and there's another smaller one in the rear tank guard.

Had front and rear diff breathers fitted before we did any of the water crossings #### but I'm guessing the rear diff oil should be changed anyway? We run an auto and it doesn't have an aftermarket breather fitted. Is there much involved in changing the transmission fluid on a 150? I seem to recall reading there was.

I don't think the transfer case oil has ever been changed, certainly not during our ownership of the vehicle.

The brakes will need some attention no doubt, there was a squeal coming from 1 rear corner (noticeable mainly when reversing) before the GTG and it's worse now.

We have a maintenance service due now anyway going off a 6 monthly schedule. By the book it's the 80,000K service but by the odometer it's only the 60,000K service. Other than the aforementioned items is there anything special we should be asking for?

If you are taking it for Toyota dealership servicing, they can take care of it. Diff is usually every 40k but in offroad use I say every 20k or whenever you think it might have water in it. $30 worth of oil & a d.i.y or cheap job, good insurance for your diff.
Auto I would recommend oil change every 50k, it probably won't have water in it, but again good insurance.
Transfer case should be ok for every 40k breather is a bit higher & they stay clean.

Yes we take it to a Toyota dealership for servicing (have to for our Extended Warranty). I've gone back through the service invoices from when it was new and there is mention of changing the front and rear diff oil and inspecting the auto and transfer case oils at the 40,000K service (before we owned it). I can't find any mention of it since though.

              Hi all
Hope everyone had a great Easter and a safe return after the GTG.
The Foxclan is still on tour and enjoying some great sights around Victoria.
Good idea for a thread topic Anthony, thanks for the suggestions
The many water crossing encountered on the High country GTG has outlined the need to replace some squeaky serpentine drive belt idlers before total falure.
Thanks to VKPrado and Playdoh96 for their assistance with some toolbox in a can (CRC & RP7) to quieten the offending bearing down.
Yes the Bridgestone 697,s have a few nics in them, I would have liked to have had mud terrain tyres fitted before the High country trip but running low twenties (psi) got us over most obsticals. Muddies next time!
Main fuel tank gaurd needs a little tap back into shape just to clear it off the tank..
Will check those fluids Cheers ####.
Got the standard brake report at the pre GTG service Toyota always tell the wife that the brakes haveonly X amount left on them. I have wanted to up grade so will source an
              upgrade option soon.
              Cheers

One thing you must do after water crossings if you have a winch fitted is give it a good run to heat it up and evaporate the water in it. Leave it a few weeks or more and next time you go to use it you are a good chance it will not work. This has happened to me with a new Warn winch years ago, lesson learnt.

Well I have the new CV in now and the second one is ordered (My road side repairs sort of worked). New rear shock bushes are sitting in the garage ready to go in on Friday and the new mirror I picked up on the way home will also be fitted on Friday but at this stage the amazing glue that Anders used is holding the old mirror together quite well (Nearly temped to leave the broken one there till the glue fails). New front diff oil replaced when the CV went in and I also have a new bump in the rear fuel tank and a puncture in the front bash plate that when straight through the metal from Billy Goats (Slipped off that pointy rock in the pouring rain). Ill try and get the Prado back on the hoist over the next week to see if there is anything else I need to tidy up. I also need to run my winch rope out and wash all my straps that we used heavily on Hernes Spur that lovely day.

Still waiting on Toyota to get the airline to fix the suspension.
Front bash plate is missing few bolts too...

I've taken the other side step off and SWMBO actually likes the look without the side steps. I'm off to the tyre shop this week after tearing a hole in the side of a D697 then off to the dealer for a service and fluid changes. The underneath looks okay...
                            Cheers, Brad

Any recommendations for post trip battery maintenance? I've got an old 5 amp battery charger from Kmart but I'm not sure if it's still any good.
