    Hi there Tokhi,

How did you go with the suspension upgrade on your car? I have one, it's a petrol and it is in need of an upgrade. I also live in Perth and not having much luck, also a lot of different stories that it can or can't be done. I will loose this and that and its going to cost me a fortune and its not worth it.

As much advise would be appreciated

    thanks

I am considering an upgrade at IronMan utilising their suspension kits @ 2 inch lift with foam cell shocks @ $1400 installed. I was told by IM that I would need to replace the factory airbags which would increase my cost by $600.

Question which was asked previously, can I do without the airbags or will this cause issues with the grande? I am not concerned about losing the comfort/sport settings and airbag lift.

Any recommendations welcome but I will be asking this same question to IM.

I also replaced my Grande air bags with coils and new shocks in April this year (2016, it is at roughly the height it was on the high setting, maybe a little below. Best thing I have done. Only downside is the ride is certainly firmer (heavy duty coils), on the up side it is less floaty. (front was all ready lifted last year).

Cost was $450 I think for the conversion (welding the brackets on) then the cost of the gear (icon shocks with Dobinsons springs)

Darren from Autocraft Geelong - he used to be on this forum a lot, and had done loads of these conversions, so I was really happy to track him down - hard to get responses via email but persistence paid off.

They also can do a bigger all round lift including dropping the diffs, but i already had the front done.

            Good luck!

Just done mine the other week as i Lost an Airbag
I bent up small bit of flat bar to install as a retainer at the bottom and drilled a 10mm hole through the centre and bolted it with a washer and nylok where the old bottom airbag locating hole is.
Ill try to attach a pics
For every part broken comes the great opportunity to upgrade, enhance and improve. Just dont tell the other half how much its going to cost.

I know the Springs are not going to come out but just some extra insurance. Im a bit scarred after the airbags decided to leave me on the bumpstops

I found these retaining washers (push washer) from China. Work a treat and fit easy as,Click image for larger version

Great thread amts! I've been lurking around but just became official. Hope this is the correct place to write this?

I've just started building (slowly) my 120 Grande. I'm a little green but learning & had planned to do the suspension as the last major upgrade but she popped on the weekend under extreme articulation. The almighty bang scared the heck out of my 6 year old son (oops). Anyway it's broken so why spend the money twice - do the upgrade now.

So I think I'll lift it 2" & improve approach & departure angles as they are commonly an scraping heavily.

Seems like the Airbag man kit OA6011 is the go for the rear.

I've read some front suspension upgrades use struts & springs, others just shocks & springs. Rookie question I'm sure, can someone explain if there is an advantage of a strut over a shock or when either one should be fitted?

                    2004 120 series Grande V6

                    Thanks

@Caffome Fiend - as above I replace my 2004 Grande Airbags with springs. Best thing I ever did as I now don't have to worry about them. What is next to go wrong? Pump breaking etc etc. I did look into airbag man and my conclusion was stick to Toyota in the end as some people reported issues when over flexed. The coils however have been fantastic.

                      What did I lose?
Obviously the adjustment - but really it was just a gimmick
Self levelling - This is probably the biggest loss if you tow a trailer I think
Comfort - yes it was certainly a bit stiffer, especially to start with (I don't notice now)
Cornering - nope, it was better with coils I felt, not that was racing it or anything
Ability to Lift - nope it has more options if coils I think
articulation - nope, seems better - but that is probably the lift.

the height of my lift is what it was like on high. you won't be able to go much higher anyway due to hubs.

I found I often ended up on the bump stops and had to reset my suspension. I don't think it was leaking though.

With coils it is like a normal car, you don't even think about the suspension anymore.

                      Good luck with your research.
                      Cheers
                      Mark

Plums . I have decided to replace with +2" lift coils as you have, just can't come at the idea of blowing a bag in the middle of the Kimberly (or some other cool spot) with my family on board! It's a rough trip home on the bump stops!

I've got King Coils (& Bilstein shocks/struts) just arrived & only just this arvo discovered

amts Grande specific springs & now I'm thinking I only half did my research & have bought the wrong thing.

Did you use a standard spring? Was some sort of conversion plate/adapter required?

                            Hi guys,

Been reading extensively this thread to decide best way to go with modifying my Prado's Grande Diesel 2008 existing OE suspension in order to make it more overlanding/light off road worthy.
Would definitely keep my rear airbags at this stage but get rid of the TEMS function on all 4 shocks.

Car is not burdened (nor will it be in the future) by bull-bar, winch, rear mounted spare, or additional fuel tank. It has however full kit of ARB skid plates, factory installed dual battery, snorkel and drawer system in the cargo area. Plan to install a 3/4 roof platform on factory mounted railings.

Thanks to what I've learnt reading this thread, I decided to change the struts & coils upfront and the struts in the back in order to achieve grater reliability/durability on gravel, sandy, dirt roads (still, most driving will be on tarmac).
Lift is not what I am after, but would not mind a minimal one if that's a byproduct of changing the suspension. I try to avoid any unnecessary strain on the rear airbags and so I would avoid exceeding a 1-2cm rear lift.
Will run on 265/70R17 during overlanding trips and 265/65R17 as a daily driver.

So far I looked up OME, Terrain Tamer, Tough Dog and looking now at King. I cannot not decide which front strut & coil and rear struts would best suit my application.

The shops in my country are only used to doing Grande suspension upgrades by simple conversion to coils, so I am pretty much stuck with a decision I cannot make by myself.

Could you suggest a combo of struts (front, rear) and coils (front) proven to work in a similar modification?

                            Thanks a million!

Probably need to mention my current suspension measurements (still the original one after 13 years and 125k km):
                              Front:
                              Left: 730mm Right: 735mm
                              Rear (airbags in "N" position):
                              Left: 760mm Right: 775mm

Would like to maintain a 20-30mm rake Rear/Front after replacement.
Would not mind a minimal lift up to:
                              Front: 770mm
                              Rear: 790mm
