  • Hankook or Achilles MT Tyres

    Hi Guys,
I recently bought a used Prado 120 (2005) V6 Petrol (unmodified) with fairly basic tyres (Maxxis bravo HT).

This is my first ever 4x4.

I am now looking to get some aggressive (MT) tyres and can't decide between the following two.

    Tyre size 265-65-17
    1) Hankook Dynapro MT RT03 - 10 ply sidewalls (LT)
    2) Achilles Desert Hawk X-MT - 3 ply sidewalls (LT)

This is my weekend car and will be used 60% in Bush/Sand/Mud/Outback & 40% black top.
I understand that MT tyres will be noisier than AT tyres but dont know how much.

PS. I have never used AT or MT tyres before and would like to know peoples opinion/experience on Hankook/Achillies MT tyres.

    Thanks in advance.

i think you may be confused with the 3 or 10 ply side walls. The Hankook may have 10 plys but not in the sidewalls . The hankook is in the mid to top price range tyre. The Achilles is a cheaper Chinese tyre, not saying there is anything wrong with them. You might want to look at the Kelly Safari TSR also. I would go for a aggressive AT rather than a mud tyre, the muds are noisy and not good on the wet black top.

go with the 265/70/17 size if your changing them also put ..Tyres - Achilles Desert Hawk XMT in the search box.

I had set of Achilies AT on my old one for a while when i was going to sell it. Within about 12 months i got rid of them as the side walls were very weak and even at over 40PSI unloaded it was like driving with half flat tyres and the car wandered over the road. Worked out to be a not cheap solution.

          Hi kapil,

I had 2 sets of Hankooks on the my Discovery they were excellent. I got 80k km out of the first set and they still had some tread left on them.
On road they were great even in the wet, off road they did every thing I asked of them. My brother is now running a set on his patrol and said the same about wet handling. As far at MT tyres go they were pretty good in the noise department. If I required a set of MT tyres on the 150 I wouldn't hesitate in getting another set.

The only warning I have are make sure you rotate them regularly, they will wear unevenly if you don't and if doing beach be prepared for low pressures, I found that I had to run 8-10 psi more often than not (may have also been the tyre size I was running a 235/850.

I can't comment on the brand you're looking at but regarding the size... As mentioned most people upgrade the tyre size (265/70) to gain some clearance - but most people also have a suspension lift. Increasing the size without a lift may result in rubbing. Prado 120's are very low as standard so I'd definitely suggest considering upgrading the suspension and then get the larger tyres.

I have recently fitted Federal Couragia MTs which were the same price and the Achilles but a bit more aggressive tread pattern, very happy with them so far. In the mud a great tyre, on the road noise but I expected that from a mud tyre. They are a 10 ply tyre. Pic of them on the prado, 265 70 17
