  • Wheel bearing vibration

Hi all, my 150 gxl prado has developed an interesting wheel bearing like vibration from what we ( Toyota and I) think is the front end. My local dealership believed it was a front right wheel bearing and have replaced it but this did not change the symptoms. In fact they think the one that went in was faulty and intend to replace it. The vehicle has 104k on it. It appeared to develop after a few things all happened at once. Firstly 90k service followed by suspension change to a bilstiens / lovells setup, not raised but HD front and standard rear with airbags.
In addition I put a steelT13 bullbar on and a winch tucked under that. No dual battery. I had all aligned etc and all seems well. The last thing was a 1000k dash to get a boat and back.
As a side note I got about a 40mm over the sagged oem suspension. Also at the 90k service it was noted that the front outer LEFT CV loint boot clamp was loose and spayed grease over the inner wheel area. This was repacked and clamped. Brake pads are all min 3 mm.
Now the symptoms. Audible vibration that steadily increases with wheel speed, whether under load or not, if I put into neutral at 100 kph there is no change.
Toyota to their credit are looking at it ( as it under extra care warranty). They have held back on the replacing the bearing again ( though it really does sound like one). I believe they intend to drop the drive shaft out of it for their next step.
I was thinking cv's slightly out of alignment but really that would be marginal. Other than that I am fresh out. Can CV joint produce these symptoms. Any advice welcome. However it really does seem to be in the front. Chhers

How much grease did the CV lose? and how long did it run low on lube? Kind of looks like a likely culprit if it's been running un-lubed for any amount of time.

Have Toyota checked the front uni's?

Did you put your diff drop in? Did it change the vibration in any way?

Hi mick. Not sure how long the clamp was loose but plenty of build up around the inner rim and brake area. Have not tried the kit yet as was a holiday here on Friday so no post delivery, hopefully get it Monday. Will put it straight in when I get it. Forgot to mention I have tried three sets of tyres on the car for no change either. I am suspicious of let cv but really sounds on the right. Cheers and thanks for your prompt service.

Was there any change at all after they changed the bearing? in noise or amount of vibration?

What happens if you apply the brakes lightly while coasting? does it go away or get worse?

Hi Mick. No change to noise after the new bearing. Braking does not change it except it slows with the car. I found the smoothest road I could today and coasted then applied slight acceleration and I thought I defected a slight sound variation. Minimal though. Kit does not clunk or anything typical of stuffed CV's. Can diffs or diff bearings fail and cause this issue? Parts not here yet so no answer on the drop kit. We are abit out of the loop here. Steve

Just an update. Tried the diff drop kit ( thanks ozioffroad) but this didn't change things but in fairness it wasn't expected to. Anyway have been able narrow down the symptoms and how it occurs. I found a nice long stretch of smooth bitumen and cruing at 80 kph it just started doing leafy and right swerves. When I swerve left No vibration / whine at at. When I swerve right no change. I have replicated this many times at various speeds for the same result. So it certainly rules in front end only I think. It also doesn't matter whether I do it under power or in neutral. As stated the front r wheel bearing was replaced. So any ideas so I can get this issue sorted. Surely it must be bearings or cv

Would left cv which was the one that spewed grease be consistent with my symptoms. Ie . If left cv is the culprit it only vibrates / whines under load. Is that normal.

Hey turtle60, funny I was just browsing the forums for this exact problem and I came across your thread. I noticed a drone in the front end on the way to Perth the other day and am still trying to track the thing. Does the same thing turning left, even just a bend in the road and it goes away. Thought it might of been front diff so dropped the oil today and threw some oil stabilizer in the there as well but no luck. Won't be able to investigate much more till I get her home and on the hoist.Any luck with yours?

We'll update and sorry alpine150 for just seeing your post today. Toyota have finally found the issue. After rotating tyres., dropping off the driveshaft, dropping the diff oil. Etc etc. they have discovered it was the Front LEFT bearing. After all this time of pleading with them to change it they finally sorted it. Apparently bearings in this model and others like fj cruiser and the 120 that share the same running gear are abit vulnerable due to a questionable seal. Anyway alpine150 if you have the same symptoms I would go for the bearings. However mine was a definite vibration that I could hear and feel. BTW I had the wheels off the ground and spun them etc but heard nothing. It was only when driving as per first post. If your not under warranty it's not a hard job to do a bearing. Plenty of post s and the best is here

Let's know how you get on. Cheers and thanks ozioffroad... I now have a diff drop kit for sale.

Bearing kit on the way! Should be here this week. Also thinking about doing the cv's while I'm at it there not far off needing it. Does anyone have any experience with extended cv shafts? I've seen these online -

                            Hi Folks,

I have a GXL 150 series which has done about 90,000km - over past few weeks I'm hearing a humming sound from the front end which gets worse around 80-100km/h. I have rotates all tyres, still no change even now have a new set of tyres. I took the car on a test with my mechanic and he seems to think its one of the front bearings. However he wasn't sure it was the LHS or RHS as the noise didn't seem to change that much when swerving left or right. Now given it seems a process of elimination (swap LHS first, then RHS if that doesn't change), it will be an expensive exercise, I was quoted up to $1200 if both were swapped out !!! Has any had similar issues where a wheel bearing fault wasn't very obvious from workshop testing ?

                            thanks
                            Rob

Anyone savvy at diagnosing which wheel bearing could be at fault before I take it to the mechanics to be "taken to the cleaners" !!
