  • Newbie 4wd'r looking for ideas for mods on a 1999 Prado

    I've just bought my 1st 4wd !! It's a 1999 Prado Snowy (petrol & auto) and is in pretty good nic for such an old car - was owned by an old bloke who towed a boat but never went off road. It's only done 134,000km's and I picked it up last week for $8,000 so I reckon I have a decent starting point with my voyage into the world of off roadin'!! Nothing has been touched yet and all I've done so far is remove the 3rd row of seats, so it's like a blank canvas ready for me to get creative!

    I've seen hawks667's buildup post (http://www.pradopoint.com/showthread...L-lots-of-pics) and was heaps impressed with that. Good job hawkesie!

    Just wondering if anyone else has any buildup photos or other ideas they wanted to put up or point me towards? I'm in the process of planning the various mod's at a pace that I can afford.

    I reckon my first task will be a drawer set behind the 2nd row seats, but I'm also thinking about taking the 2nd row of seats out and building a bed extension which would transform it into more of a campervan that I can crash in if needed. Most of the time it would be just me or 1 other but I want to make it so the 2nd row could be refitted if needed. Have looked into factory made ones but they cost way too much and I'm handy enough to build some. Any tips or close ups of drawers would be sweet!

    If anyone has any ideas or photos they would like to share, it would be much appreciated !

    There's plenty mods and photos in my build up to have a look over (link below).

    One item which isn't in my build up is a full length bed / rear shelf system. It's very handy for touring/camping trips as it allows access to all the gear whilst leaving enough space for a double mattress on top. It requires the removal of all rear and middle row seats so not useful for families of course, but for singles or couples it saves a lot of time at camp sites. No need to unpack everything, no tent cleaning/folding, stop anywhere/anytime, and items can be accessed without pulling everything out so a lot of time is saved. The only "setup" required is for the bed - the front seats must be moved forward and the bed base extended - which only takes a minute.

      Hi benno,
      Congrats on buying your 1st 4wd. Changing your interior lights to led is a nice simple one to get you started.       First thing I went and did when I bought my 4x4 was get a decent recovery kit( snatch strap, shackles, equaliser strap, recovery hitch receiver, shovel) and a good quality compressor and tyre gauge. I class em as essentials not mods. Most important thing is get out and get your prado dirty. You'd be surprised how capable it is in standard form and it will give you a good idea of what you need and what you wish you had...my wish list is about 10 pages long lol.

        Thanks for the reply mate - much appreciated! Your bed extension idea sounds like the exact thing I have in mind for my setup. I didn't need any upselling but when you say "pull up anywhere, no tents to fold" I am totally sold!! I couldn't see the link to your setup and I'm really interested to see your layout. If you have any photos or measurements/materials used as well that would be awesome.

          No worries Benno. Yeah it's not in my build up because I didn't entirely finish it (half painted), but has been used many times. I'll try to get some pics up this week. It's made entirely from plywood.

            Hi Benno,
            Decent tyres are one of the first things i would do. That will make the biggest initial difference to how far it can go with more confidence. As Shangus said - get out and use it and you'll soon work out what you need first. Big thing for me is decent lights - standard headlights are pretty ordinary if you do alot of outback driving at night. I loved my HID inserts and decent driving lights - one of the best things i did.
