  • Removal of rear Air Spoiler/Rear Wiper Assembly

    Hi All,

I have searched everywhere but cannot find any details on the removal of the rear air spoiler/rear wiper assembly, I have removed the rear door trim, disconnected the wiper washer tube/electrics and attempted to remove the 4 bolts however except for one (which did come out) they undo halfway then seem to just spin without undoing any further. I can only think that the head of the bolt must fit into a recessed area and turn when the bolt becomes half undone. I will try to undo them in the morning with this in mind but if anybody knows otherwise or of any tricks please make a post.

Are you trying to remove to replace the rear wiper blade? I tried going down this path, but ended up with the simpler method of just turning off the ignition once the rear wiper had swept to a position that I could remove the blade.
Apologies if this is not why you are removing, I couldn't find anything whilst looking either.

The official Toyota wiper change procedure is nothing more than stop the motor mid cycle.

          Thanks guys

I want to pull the spoiler off to give it a good clean and check over so might as well change the wiper blades while I have it off.

Thanks starbuck76, I will print these pages and try and interpret them to remove it, this is the only instance that I have seen that explains how to do this in the whole of PP. I will post a few snaps if I can get it off.

How did you go with this ?? - I noticed my rear spoiler is quite loose and needs a tighten before I head off on a trip in two weeks...Did you manage to take any progress photos ? - Will I be able to access the screws to tighten up once the garnish is removed ?

X2. Have a loose spoiler which rattles as a result. I can't work out how to tighten.

From those drawings it looks like there might be some internal clips holding the spoiler?

I had had mine off a few months ago to mount some reversing LEDs next to the LED stop light. Will double check tomorrow but from memory just remove the 6 bolts. Note - there are two plastic caps on the inside of the door which hide two bolts behind. You just need a socket with a medium to long extension. There's a little cover to remove that sits underneath the spoiler (as pictured) to help with unplugging the electrical connector before you remove the bolts. I did it the hard/long way and unplugged it once I had already removed the bolts. I didn't notice the small cover until later when I was disassembling the spoiler to mount the LEDs.

Hi guys, sorry for the long delay in responding, but better late than never. I had to drill the bolts out as the little backing plates that are inserted into the spoiler had seized and were just turning in their plastic housing in the spoiler. The bolts were seized up solid so if anybody ever has their back door trim off I would advise the replacement with stainless bolts or giving them a good spray with lubricant. Once the bolts were free the spoiler just lifts off the spikes on the door.

I then had to make new foam spacers and reinsert them into the slots that house them that sit between the spoiler and door.

Then it's a matter of mounting the spoiler back onto the alignment spikes on the back of the door and tightening the new bolts (stainless) up.

Thanks for the tips. Mine is flapping loose too. Asked toyota to fix it and they spent 2 months figuring out that they couldn't get hold of the special double sided tape needed to put back in to fix it being loose. I asked what sort of tape I needed and they said just any thin double sided tape. But they couldn't source any and the only way they could do it was with the tape that comes with a new spoiler ($1200). Up till now, they've been good but I'm starting to think I'd better go elsewhere. With this advice, I'm going to try it myself now though.

Tape is readily available thru amayama.

I think Toyota are telling fibs.. and just don't want to do the job unless it's for big coin.

Thanks, I'll give it a try. You're probably right about toyota though.

Lost an argument with a tree

Anyone have suggestions whether this might be repairable with plastic welding just the shroud? The break is pretty clean and would be barely noticeable up top.
