  • 2010 SILVER 150 GXL Rig build

Hi all, my name is Clinton, I have been a keen wheeler all my life, my dad actually used to be a 4WD instructor in the north of QLD, I moved here in the mid 90s and never went back, the coast is sooooo much more nicer in the west than the east

So after a few GQ RB25 patrols and a 4.5 GU and a 4.8 GU I decided the petrol bills were getting out of hand, did a tour of the south including Kal, Esperance, Albany, Walpole and then up to Pemberton then back to perth with a total fuel bill of around 2500 bucks .....

Enter the Prado ..... I am actually a H/D mechanic and being in tech services I got to tour around in hire cars int he pilabra, I had a brand new 120 GX 6 speed manual when I was in Tom Price and absolutley loved it, the fuel economy was great and with the apprentice driving saw speeds up around the $1.60 often, so for a diesel I was impressed. So last year I was talking to my best mate that happens to be the Manager of Kalaumunda Toyota and mentioned to him that I was keen on a 120 prado (I like the flares and the look fo them) he mentioned that they get good resale value but he could do a one owner trade on a 150 GXL, but he said it was manual, I would prefer the manual so for me I was keen, he detailed it and sold it to me for a steal even the insurance company said that if I went for purchase value it was under the market value so I paid a bit more and went the market value on it

Here is a picture of it outside the dealership after my test drive to see how it would go fitting in my garage (with future mods planned for a lift and a roof rack.

And here it is in for the test fit in the garage plenty of room for growth

I had planned a trip to Kalbarri with the prado and I also had purchased off a mate a killer off road camper, with the now expanding little family I have I figured I couldn't live out of a swag for ever (actually got sick of the missus telling me there were bugs crawling on her when there clearly wasnt!) So I fitted the windows with 35 grade tint on the two front windows and 20 grade tint on the back to keep it legal, also a good mate hooked me up with an awesome deal for a Tracklander roof rack as well, so we fitted that before the trip.

It stayed this way for a bit until pretty much about a month ago, I had my cousin that works for a 4WD wrecker call me with a killer deall for a ARB front bar, its not a deluxe, but then again I dont plan on getting a winch, I just wanted a bit more protection that the factory ally bar that was supplied. Here is the bar on a smashed ex minesite 150

    So......

I did a lot of research on here and thanks to all the guys that had the Dick Cepek Torques fitted, I knew what size rims and offset I needed to keep it plod friendly, I chose the 285s because I like the foot print and the little lift it gives, also chose the M/T MTZ as I have had them on all my old 4wds and I get really good KMs out of them with little to no punctures even on the harsh roads up north western Australia. SO a call to my mate that owns Wilkinson suspension and he hooked me up with another killer deal on the rims, tires and suspension (Wilkinson Suspension is the Dick Cepek and Mickey Thompson dealer and also the dealer for Tough Dog suspension and Kings Spring coils) so with all that purchased, it was off to my killer toy shop to fit it all up, 3 hours later I was finished and ready to go for a test drive.

Test fit in the garage (we have a 32 course garage, was the wifes idea as we always have lifted 4wds so it made sense when building our house to do it then)

Future plans will be to fit the bumper after I get it painted and then I will fabricate my own exhaust and fit that, once that is on, I will look for a suitable chip to tune the exhaust with hopefully a little more boost to give it some more punch in the undies. After all that I plan on fitting the ARB air compressor with a tank and a front and rear diff locker for some sand driving (which there seems to be plenty of in WA)

I will have to finish fitting the two way and ScanGauge to the interior so once I do that I will post up some photos of the mods as I go

Will keep photos up as I go

Oh I am hanging out for that, I absolutley hate the factory front bar, I was told by my mate that runs Kalamunda Toyota that it is a $3600 front bar, I cant see any of that amount of dollars in it

Wow, I think for $3,600 they must be charging full retail for the bar and like a wounded bull for fitting....

I know its not the same vehicle but put a factory alloy bar on a cruiser ute about 9 months ago for $2700 fitted for a customer, and we made a heap out of that.

I was shocked let me tell you, even the deluxe bar from ARB fitted is less than that and looks a 1000 times more classier

I had a factory alloy bar on my 80 Series Cruiser but can't recall what I paid (bought the vehicle new). I just hated the way it tarnished so quickly, won't have another.

Very nice mate, I am still trying to decide on what wheels and tyres for my silver prado! I originally thought i was going to get the same combo as you - but everything on mine is colour coded silver. If i did it again i prob would have gone black bar work.

How's it look in person with the silver and black wheels?

                    Matt

Actually looks really good, I wanted full black wheels but I am happy with the little alloy accents, I will be going a black front bar, I want to respray it black and make it look nice and new before I put it on.

Agreed Fido666 the ally bar has lost the shine in more ways than one

Prado looks awesome mate. Which i had of had a nice work shop like that to put my lift in. Did it in the carport with stands .
Looks real nice with those rims. How does it go with the 285s? Any rubbing?

No rubbing at all so far, yet to test on full artic in the dunes, I could imagine the shit job doing it in the carport on stands, was bad enough on the hoist

One thing I noticed was how much nicer the rig is to drive now, I recommend it to anyone also the whole 285 thing, I love the look and have not been bothered by the cops at all

What is the desired offset for fitting 285's on the 150?
