  • TJM Airtek Snorkel vs Safari

    Hi PP members,

I'm struggling to make a decision between the TJM Airtek snorkel and the safari snorkel for a 150 series diesel GXL Prado. I've been speaking to dealers for both and I get conflicting information.

I love the slimline look of the Airtek and how it wraps around the windscreen, however I have been told they make a whistling noise when used.... Some have also said that it may take in water given how close it is to the windscreen if the wipers are working overtime (not sure how true this is)

The safari has good reviews, but I'm not sure about how boxy it is and high far it sits out, not slimline at all....

I'm hoping for some good advice, given I am a novice when it comes to snorkels. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks
    Pete

I don't think you will find any difference in performance or quality between the 2 brands. I think this comes down purely to looks and which YOU prefer.

    Cheers Andrew

Used to own a 4 Runner with a Safari snorkel - did a short but deep river crossing in the Vic High Country a few years ago. The bow wave flowed up the windscreen and over the roof - no water ingestion.
Same crossing by a Navarra with an Airtek snorkel - same bow wave over the roof but because the inlet lays against the pillar..... water ingested and motor stops.
I agree the Airtek looks slicker but in this circumstance the Safari performed better.
      Regards
      John

I have a an airtek on my 150 GX and it is by far the quietest snorkel I have ever experienced. It has very little wind noise, or induction noise. The only thing I would say is not to believe the hype about saving fuel. There has been no discernible change in my fuel consumption since it was fitted. Must admit, I have not been in any creek crossings where water has gone up as high as the top of the windscreen though!

Must've hit the water hard for it to do that eh. I had water on the windscreen doing this and afterwards I figured it was because I was too fast.

I did say it was deep..... I don't recall the speed but low range first or second.

The Navara just got to the really deep bit and a second or so later... water over the snorkel inlet and gulp!
No obvious engine damage once the glowplugs were removed to pump the water out with the starter. The intercooler pipe was also removed to pump the water out. (Despite the apparent lack of damage I'm glad it wasn't my vehicle.)

I am not knocking or recommending either snorkel it is just my experience, they both appear to be good products.

Awesome photos mate. Pretty sure I've seen that first one somewhere hey.
I can't say I like the look of the Airtech but it doesn't stick out like a sore thumb like the Safari does. Either does the job nicely though

                  Matter of opinion. The Airtech looks emasculated to me. :{

Yeah I much prefer the look of the Safari, looks tougher to me!

Looks are always an individual thing.

Thinking same question, thinking I like the look of the Safari better, something just doesn't seem right with Airtec. Rang a couple of places today and best I got was Safari $700 fitted, what sort of prices are out there?
