  • ESC too sensitive on our 2011 VX

My wife was complaining about out the ESC kicking in on a few bends on her way to work, I put it down to her being a lead foot and told her to slow down and you should be right, she added speed was not the issue and went into details about when it happened. It turns out there is a couple of bends that have nice little dip right in the middle of the bend and at even speeds around 45 the ESC thinks it needs to intervene.

Last night I drove the car through from Monbulk to Emerald and experienced the same issue on a few bends, this time without any mid corner instability. it seamed the ESC was eager to correct any body roll in an instant, very sensitive. I drive the same road with our 2012 Kluger and I have never had the ESC activate.

I have searched the forum for anyone with this issue, but couldn't find anything. Anyone else having this same issue, or has this been a problem in the past?

There must be some loss of traction for ESC to activate.

What condition are your tyres in?

    Was the road damp/wet?

The tyres are about 60% through their life! and the road was warm and dry! it seams to be when the vehicles body rolls as it normally would through the turn! the car has done 50,000km so I wouldn't think suspension could be the issue, not sure what to think.

Does sound strange.... unless there is a slip and loss of traction the ESC should not engage.

If it continues to do it with no detectable traction loss I'd take it to your local dealer to get checked.

I have had the same problem similar corner on the way to work. Left hander slightly downhill with a dip in it, car detects loss of traction inside left front wheel and activates stability control and instead of letting you turn the car, it goes straight on. Stupid, going straight on is the last thing you want in this case.

It was a bit better with firmer springs and Bilsteins, but in the end I just learnt to slow down before the corner or drive around the dip a bit.

For all the times I put the boot in it, I never had any electronic nannies cut in, just on that stupid bend.
I am surprised the Prado VX does that with the KDSS, in the cruiser also with kdss it doesn`t get upset by that corner.

I think its a normal characteristic of the Prado , it did it on that corners with both the 2010 and 2012 model I had.
stepped up the a 200 LC for towing,
but had a 2012 and 2010 150 Prado GXL auto diesel in Graphite with Bridgestone D697 A/T. Dobinson C59-300/325 and Bilsteins. Accessories : two baby seats. Sidewinder`s Dual Battery isolator and rear power outlet kit. Pirana Battery tray, Hayman Reese towbar with Toyota wiring kit and Brains`s guard.

I've had the ESC kick in just leaving the driveway with my 2009 Kakadu. It has also happened at random times when going straight on a good road surface. I asked the dealer to check it out at one of the services but they couldn't replicate the problem and it hasn't happened recently so I'm stumped.

ESC dormant detect slip, that is TRC. ESC is about yaw, steering angle and speed and throttle.

All it does is "steer" the car back on course by braking one wheel or two wheels on one side of the car to turn it. It also slows down the vehicle and removes throttle control to prevent worsening the situation.

I'd suggest the alarm your getting while cornering may be the body roll, or dodgy sensor. You can recalibrate the ESC bit it may be dealer specific process but I was under the impression it is done every time the car starts.

Check your tyres are all inflated properly too. Otherwise slow down as you say.

I can't get the ESC to activate on sand let alone on bitumen unless I try to roll the thing at 40kmh in soft soft sand but I am in the 2014 model with slight suspension updates so there may be a different program loaded to newer models.

It does seem pretty odd, maybe get it checked. I have a 2009 VX and don't have any problem like that around corners. Only time mine kicks in is cornering a bit quick in the wet. But I also get near no roll in normal cornering conditions as my new springs and shocks have made the KDSS feel even better
