  • Rhino racks heavy duty v vortex for Prado 150 GXL

    Hi all,

I am trying to decide whether to put 2 x rhino vortex bars on my roof rails or to remove the roof rails and have 3 x rhino heavy duty bars on my 2014 Prado GXL. Both have pros and cons.

I will have a rhino AT1510 alloy tray on top, also shovel holders and a side awning.

I am familiar with the heavy duty bars as I had them on my old navara. They are sturdy and strong, but in my opinion do not look as good on a prado as the vortex. Plus the heavy duty would be more "permanent" where as the vortex on the rails are easier to remove when not in use.

Has anyone got the vortex bars on their prado and if so how have they performed, specifically off road?

Also has anyone put an awning on the vortex bars?

    Cheers

What are you intending on carrying?

From my understanding of the 120 (presume 150 is similar) with the rails you only have about 80KG load limit. Without the rails you have 100Kg. The Rhino tray is 18.5kg that only leaves you 61Kg of loading, add 1 or 2kg for the vortex rails, shovel, and you shovel holders and awning and you are getting close only having 50Kg to play with.

That's right. Depends on how much you want to carry.

Also, the method to remove the bars off the roof is pretty easy too. About as quick as the bars off the rails. They are only 1 M6 screw per foot.

Good point r4ndll on the weight. I was not aware of the 80kg limit on the rails.

Thanks amts I did not realise that the feet only had 1 screw each. 6 screws in total does not sound that bad!

Given your 2 responses I think the heavy duty is the way to go!

        Appreciate the quick responses.

Make sure you check the price from your dealer for the HD 3-bar kit. You might find that they are cheaper than the equivalent from a Rhino dealer.

I assume that removing the rails is the same as the 120 and you are left with six bumps on the roof when you take the cross rails off?

Yes, I had the Vortex bars (well the Toyota badged version) on my rails originally. Not much wind noise from them and they worked well off-road, even took them on the GTG up to the Vic High Country with a big tradesman box strapped to them (that didn't work so well off-road LOL). We had an awning, TraxRax, 4 Maxtrax, and a long handled shovel attached by way of Quick Fist clamps attached to the TraxRax, none of it moved.

I now have the Rhino Pioneer Platform attached to the rails using the existing feet off the Vortex bars, mainly due to the tradesman box shifting too much on the rails. The intention was to take the Pioneer Platform off between trips and whack the bars back on because it does cause more noise and drag, haven't gotten around to it yet though.
